Alpine cable cars: Which ones allow pre-booking?

Planning some weekend hikes with the use of cable cars and I noticed that without reservation there is a high chance of long queues.

Some cable cars allow for pre-booking inside regular hours, but I could not find a comprehensive overview. So maybe we could compile one here?

  • Palfries (Alvier area from Seeztal)
  • Aeugsten (from Ennenda/Glarus)
  • Aelplibahn (from Malans/Maienfeld)

I’d be more interested in where you might expect to find queues, especially at this time of year. In high ski season maybe, but in October I very much doubt it.

TBH the idea of needing to pre-book has never entered my head.

I’d tend to agree.

Even the popular ridge walk from Stoos never seems to have much in the way of a queue in the hiking season.

However, I know people who always seems to experience queues wherever they go -for the parking, for the cable car for everything but these are the people who choose to go late morning.

Thanks for turning this on its head …

Weather forecast for Sunday is great after so far October was mixed, and I expect loads of people.

I have witnessed long queues in winter, summer and also autumn particularly on Sundays and on the cable cars with small load (6-8 persons) that only leave every half hour or at best 20 mins. The ones above are notorious. Same for Riemenstalden in Uri, Fisetengrat (Urnerboden), Tierfehd (Glarus), Eggberge (Uri).

The later, the worse. But it is the weekend and I don’t want to get up earlier than during the week. That is why I ask for the one I can pre-book, you see?

You guys waiting for the cable car going up. You are getting it wrong. Walk up, ride down. Your legs will thank you.

That is not wrong and have done this. But if valley is 500m, top of cable car 1500m and summit 2500m - I honestly want the lift up.
