Aluminium moka pot put into dishwasher

After years of builidng up a patina on my moka pot, xmas guests used it and put it in the dishwasher and now it turned a funny mottled color. Is there any saving this?

Cure in their blood.

To fix a Moka pot that has been put in the dishwasher, follow these steps:

  1. Assess the Damage: If it’s aluminum, it may appear dull or develop white spots due to oxidation. Stainless steel pots are generally unaffected (Moka Pot Dishwasher Tips – LuxHaus) (How To Clean A Moka Pot - Aluminium and Stainless Steel).
  2. Clean with Natural Solutions: Mix lemon juice or vinegar with baking soda to create a paste. Apply it to the affected areas and let it sit for 5 minutes, then scrub gently and rinse thoroughly (Moka Pot Dishwasher Tips – LuxHaus (https://www.reddit.com/r/Coffee/comments/2chw6e/moka_pot_rescue/).
  3. Avoid Abrasives: For aluminum pots, avoid using steel wool or harsh chemicals, as they can damage the surface further (How To Clean A Moka Pot - Aluminium and Stainless Steel) (equipment - Aluminium moka pot put through dishwasher and then polished - would it alter taste? - Coffee Stack Exchange).
  4. Test Brew: After cleaning, brew a few rounds of coffee to ensure any residual flavors from cleaning agents are eliminated (Moka Pot Dishwasher Tips – LuxHaus).

Let me know if you manage to fix it =) I once had the same issue but I never tried to fix it, it had just stayed ugly like this for a few years, until I’ve had to buy a new one for other reasons.

Recycle and buy a new one. Not worth the risk. Send a bill to the guest.

Simple answer. Get a new one and this time stainless steel. Your guests should have known better.

and mine is sitting idle as it doesn’t work on induction hub

I’m leaning towards this as a stainless steel one would work with the induction hob.

I’ve been using electric ones while living in Switzerland i.e. they come with their own base, it’s a bit safer as it switches off on its own:

  • Bialetti Moka Timer - it was fine; 2 downsides I could think off: the sound it plays became annoying over time and also it would forget sound/clock settings on power off
  • Cilio - it was fine but it lasted only half a year, spare parts are too expensive to order from Germany, also it poses as a German product but there’s a similar one available on Aliexpress which raises questions; I didn’t try to repair it
  • Bialetti Elettrika - it’s the one I am using now; I am satisfied, only that the volume of coffee is smaller and the base isn’t detachable - it’s made to be easily detachable from the cable plug

I wish they had a larger variant of the latest one.
