They are really small with a bizarre texture and the one I tried had a couple of pretty large pips in the middle.

I think they are used them for jelly, too. Wonder if they are like concord grapes.
I'm pretty sure they're not just for eating as the one I tasted was really not very nice.

The Americanos in our Coop last week were pretty awful specimens, tasting at best like a poor subsitute. And yes, tough.

When you find a good bunch, though....
I make a jelly (this is the traditional J in PB&J), once in a while a juice, more often a syrup. The syrup is wonderful as a base for a game sauce or a sorbet.
