In any case, I got a colleague to call ahead and check before setting out.
this is quite high...
This may be a stupid question, but is there a knack to getting the back off, or is it really OK to use a crowbar? Will I end up with a handful of broken parts?
Phew!
Actually, I tried it with my Lyca Mobile SIM first and with that, the handset wasn't locked. It was only when I inserted my Swisscom SIM that it came up with the Unlock Code Required screen.
I punched in the NCK from the webpage posted earlier and job done.
Now I have to defend it from the missus, who's still using a brick.
Just the handset?
My german is not up to scratch so not sure, but the lady seemed to say that if I wanted only the phone, then I had to go to the Mobile shop...
I don't get it ... if it's prepaid, why do I need a contract??
and what am I signing up for when I sign the contract? I just want the damn phone!
However, from OK's point of view, getting you on their network is the most important thing so I wouldn't blame them if they required you buy a SIM, especially as the phone has a 24-month lock. (Although for unlocking it takes seconds.)
The lady assumed I wanted a SIM when I went in to buy one and as it's only 10CHF (with 15CHF credit) I thought what the hell. Note that you get 100MB free data transfer with the SIM within the first 60 days, so at least you can have a play.
Their data tariff looks good also, but I can't see what the limit is on their 2CHF-per-day or 10CHF-per-month deals are.
EDIT: Having looked on their website, they say there are 2 deals available, SIM-Card only or Mobile Phone with SIM-Card.
- new phone with new number.
- new phone but maintain old pre-paid number (which would imply that you would need to fill a number porting form, which would be forwarded to your current provider, and also to ok.-, eventually porting your number from your existing provider to ok.-).
- new phone but maingain old post-paid number (same concept as above).
So, effectively, in all 3 cases, you have to buy the ok.- SIM too. If you are not interested in their connection and/or their prices, then you could simply go for the first option, use the phone unlocking tips on this thread, use the ok.- SIM for internet surfing till the credit expires, and then destroy it and replace it with your existing SIM from your current provider.
I'm thinking of getting one today. Is the screen as good as one can expect from phones of this generation?
As they come they are sim locked for 24 months, so in effect OK are subsidising the handset, I guess they didn't realise it was so simple to unlock them, doh
eta the screen is oled, so it should be on par with the iphone4's screen
eta2 seems the screen may not be oled, I can't find a spec sheet that says it is, but thats what I was told
well for 100chf its worth the risk, if you don't like it unlock it and sell it on, you'll get your money back at least.
What a laugh reaching over the newspapers and lotto cards to buy a pretty fancy mobile from a lovely old lady in a little kiosk next to the tramstop at Claraplatz (Kleinbasel).. felt like a right old drugs lord
p.s.
Had to buy the sim as well.. for an outrageous 10chfs.
Will try tomorrow morning.
I'm debating using a custom rom i found online to upgrade to 2.2. Hesitant though, anyone willing to have a go first?
