Hello,
We have been in Switzerland for 4 years now and resided for the last few years in Vaud canton. However we have recently received a tax submission form from Geneva canton, despite not living or working from there.
Can we ignore this?
Thanks
James
Never ignore anything from the tax office. Just write them a letter stating that you do not live nor work in Kanton Geneva.
They definitely know you don't live in GE since they addressed it correctly.
Exactly, so why would they be claiming we owe them tax? We submit tax for the full year in VD.
The only way to find out is to contact them and ask them.
Definitely don’t ignore it, that’s a really bad idea.
A few years ago the Genevan authorities tried to tax people working in Geneva but living in Vaud. In Switzerland you're taxed in your residence canton (unless taxed at source).
As others have said it's probably best not to ignore letters from the tax office, but at the time people were advised to return the tax demand with the remark "non assujetti dans le canton" (not taxable in the canton) written on it.
Why would you ignore any government request? Just call them and clarify your situation.
I would include information on our residence, our employers and tax numbers. If you have ever lived or worked in GE - the dates that ended.
Many people work in Geneva but pretend to live in VD or VS to secure a better tax rate. It appears they are doing one of their periodic checks.
Thanks for the simple tip! this helps a lot. Will send back...
Makes sense i guess if this is a material revenue issue, i guess were just part of some kind of data matching sweep.
I dont speak French! this is always difficult when the topics are technical in nature. I already wrote to VD canton Impots representative asking for help and they balked at it.
Use DeepL.com to draft a letter and send it registered. And keep a copy.
Well what does the document actually say???
If you ignore it they will simply raise an assessment against you based on their estimates and eventually you might even need to pay that assessment before you can even appeal it.
This is something NOT to be ignored.
Why did you write to the authorities in VD, when you received the letter from GE? As others have suggested, write to the GE tax office by registered mail and ask for clarification/cancellation of the request. Alternatively, you could call them and explain; they might even speak to you in English if you ask nicely.
