Another post on importing a car from the EU to Switzerland

Hi all! New year means a new post asking for help on importing a car from the EU to Switzerland

I have an offer to buy a 2016-made car from a friend in northern Europe with a fairly big discount which I am seriously considering. The car has reasonable mileage (~35k km) and has always been kept in good condition. I've tried to compile a list of things I need to prepare if I decide to go through with it but I still have a few questions left as I'm not the most experienced person in this topic. If you guys have anything to add I would really appreciate the help!

One major question I'm unsure about is whether I can actually drive this vehicle in Switzerland before it has the Swiss license plates? I've read online that after importing it through the customs I can drive it with foreign plates for one month. Is this correct?

Documents needed to import the car Certificate of Conformance (CoC) - needed at the Swiss customs - either order online or source from the official car dealer Vehicle registration and ownership docs - needed at the customs and later when registering the car in Switzerland - obtained upon the purchase of the vehicle Vehicle sale invoice - needed at the Swiss customs - can be typewritten and obtained upon purchase Certificate of Origin (EUR1) - needed at the Swiss customs to avoid paying the customs duties - can try to source from the original car dealer Export documents - needed at the Swiss customs - need to be sourced in the country of purchase. If I bring the car through Germany, do I need these stamped in the country where I made the purchase or can I also get them stamped in Germany at the border? Import docs - needed at the Swiss customs - done electronically from the e-dec form

Additional requirements License plates - if possible keep the original ones (foreign) on the car. If not, get temporary export plates Payment of duties - VAT (~8%) and Car Tax (~4%) - paid at the Swiss customs Emission test - required to get the Swiss license plate - done in Switzerland upon successfully bringing the car from the EU Vehicle test (MFK) - once the emission test is done I should go to SVA with all the paperwork and the emission test confirmation to get a time slot Temporary insurance - needed to drive the vehicle until the I obtain the Swiss license plates - can be either from Switzerland or from the previous owner?

In the end the process would be: purchase the car and get the registration documents, invoice, export declaration (does it need to be stamped straight away or can I get it stamped at the German-Swiss border?) temporary insurance and license plates in the country of origin. Drive the car to German - Swiss border. Pay VAT + duty tax (potentially) + car tax. Get import declaration signed and drive home. Then pass the emission test and go to SVA with all docs from the customs to arange a date for MFK. Pass MFK and take all docs to SVA to get the license plate.

Did I get this right or am I missing anything in my list?

The place where you get license plate/register car is called StVA.

The MFK is done at the StVA.

A 2016 car will not need an emission test.

You will have to prepare the export documents where the car is, and you will get the export stamp when you export it from the EU customs area.

You can use the foreign plates one month. See ASA Guidline No. 1. You will need customs Form 13.20 A which you will get when you declare the car at the Swiss border. After that it needs Swiss plate or it can no longer be used or stored on public roads.

Thanks a lot for the response. I think this pretty much clears all the questions I've had!

Hello,

I'm planning to importa a car from Germany to Switzerland this year. Your post is very helpful, I want to ask if there was other steps in the whole process which you didn't mention in this post?
