I haven't taken much interest in comic books for years. In my student days or thereabouts I went to the Quartier Latin in Paris where at that time there were comic shops by the dozen, where I remember leafing through the books with great interest. But the ones I bought and took home turned out to have rather dull story lines and I never re-read them. Many I ended up giving away and now I can't even rememeber their titles or the names of the artists. Typical story, some guy is murdered, detective is put on the case. The trail of evidence leads to some foreign espionnage service. Scene moves from Paris to some imaginary Arab country or Africa, with lots of cool artwork and exotic fragrance in the setting, but rather 2D storyline. It all ends in some James Bond type showdown with the detective versus the baddy boss in which a lot of expensive gear gets burnt up. And after thst it's still not clear why the original guy was murdered in the first place.
Well, on Saturday, by chance almost, I walked into the comic shop in Zurich's Niederdorf and I ended up with the same fascination. I love the cliche type pictures, especially of the quasi nostaligic type ones with 1950s street scenes and shady detectives.
Maybe they are not really written for the story but its all just about the cliche art?
Anybody out there have similar impressions, and / or recomendations?
