Anybody travelled with Aer Lingus recently

Booked a flight from Geneva to Dublin with the Irish national airline Aer Lingus to discover at the end of of the ordering process that they now charge you 5 CHF to pick your seat on the plane (for which your seat is normally guaranteed) and 16chf per 20 kilo bag. What a rip-off Aer Lingus. The sums are not important its just the lack of transparency that is totally annoying. Anybody using Aer Lingus got any thoughts on this?

Yes - fly Ryanair from Friedrichshafen or Karlsruhe to DUB.

until ,at least, they buy Aer Lingus...

It seems that Ryanair are even worse in that if you have the misfortune to need a wheelchair to get to the plane, you will be charged an extra.

They should'nt - they charge ALL passangers extra to cover the costs of those people who have the nerve of using a wheel chair in an airport.

I think you are bang out of line with that one - some people use wheel chairs at airports because they are not physically able to do the distance between the checkin and the gate.

If you'd ever needed to use this service, or travel with someone who needed it, you wouldn't make such a comment.

EDIT: I just realised that you might not have been having a go at people who use wheelchairs at airports, your comment may have been sarcasim directed at the airline. If I have made a misunderstanding, I apologise - but you should be careful to phrase things clearly when saying stuff like that.

Irony is not only a name of a Swatch.

Swiss law 251.23.4 - all jokes must be clearly marked. failure to do so will cost 250 or residence permit.

Mate, like I said - don't expect everyone to read between the lines when it comes to potentially inflammatory comments. There are people who have a go at those who use wheelchairs at airports - I've heard them. Don't expect everyone to be able to read your mind, this is the internet and we can't hear tone of voice or facial expressions.

"Sorry for not being clear, apologies for any misunderstandings" might have been a better response, IMHO.

My dad (used to work at Heathrow) always told me never fly with any of the African airlines where the country has changed name in the last few years or had a civil war in the last decade and never fly with Aer Fungus.

And now there's another good reason.

Don't worry Pashosh, I got you...

I'm just a soul who's intentions are good, Oh lord - please don't let me be misunderstood.

How long would it take Dubliner to get from Geneva (near a conveniently located airport) to these?

OK, we'll rule them out.

We should try to remember that budget airlines are squeezing the sector and that those travelling light and not needing seat reservation benefit. After all, prices are significantly less than "traditional" airlines.

I think Dubliner's actually complaining about the way these prices are factored into small print. This is typical of these carriers.

I think more importantly that jokes need to be in good taste

Or at all funny...

The budget airlines are getting more and more difficult to deal with, constantly adding extras. The most bizarre one is Jet2.Com, you are better off checking at the aiport thus costing them more money than online as they charge you to choose your seat...The cc/dc charges are getting higher and higher as well, one wonders how the thousands of shops around manage to survive without slapping a charge on items bought (of course they do but it's included in the price...). As for changing your flight, why does it cost 20£ to do so yourself on the internet as with Easyjet.

Not sure if I'm reading Pashosh's comment in the same context as everyone else. It seems to me to not be pointed at disabled people, but said from the point of view of the airlines, who do seem to think exactly that - 'how dare these people expect special treatment withour paying for it', that sort of thing.

hi,

I fly aerlingus very often (last time was 3 weeks ago) between zurich and dublin.

The luggage thing has been around since february however i have never known of paying to select a seat- it must be very new (like i said 3 weeks ago was my last flight).

Yep, the baggage charge did p&^% me off initially as well. However aer lingus is great, i have found it better overall than swiss and i have found it relatively cheap as well. No complaints from this end.
