Anyone has tried to suspend your Permit C? Help!

Hi there,

I’m planning to suspend my permit C cuz I’m leaving temporarily for another country for 3 years.
In the depart announcement, I need to choose a date of departure, and I want to put the end of December to simplify the tax declaration. But I will actually leave in the beginning of January. Anybody knows if I can stay a few more days in Switz after my permit is suspended?
I remember they always check the permit when I pass the custom at the airport, will it be a problem if I don’t have permit when I take the plane to leave Switzerland?

Thanks a lot!!!

Most people are allowed to stay in Switzerland as a tourist. All depends on your nationality.
Did you already get the approval that your permit is suspended? It is short days (if you mean this December).

Who checks your permit? Customs don´t do that at the airport.

Apologies Oakbrook but the immigration officers screening departures from Schengen will look for an entry stamp or a residence permit.

Immigration is not Customs, or? I agree with your point on immigration.

Customs and immigration are two separate functions. Customs regulating goods and immigration regulating people.

OP, you should ask the people dealing with your permit suspension. I’m guessing they will give you a letter that allows your exit from Schengen.

The last time I looked, a C-permit could only be suspended for about 1 year, and with extensions an absolute maximum of 2 years. Not to mention the horror stories of people returning and being placed on a B.

Have the rules changed?

It may be that it’s one of those things that varies by canton but here in Neuchâtel a C permit can be put on hold for a maximum of 4 years. It’s usually two years with the possibility to extend it for a further two years.

permit can be frozen for up to four years

what nobody knows is thar you need to return to the same canton that froze it. other cantons may not honor the freeze.

you can submit your application to freeze the permit from abroad and pay the fees from abroad.

I can’t be sure if this is accurate. But someone on the old forum said, although you can suspend your C permit for up to 4 years, you can’t suspend it for longer than your current permit is valid for. So if you permit is up for renewal in 2 years, you need to be back before then. Your permit doesn’t not renew when frozen. Not sure if anyone can verify that?
