I've been translating an installation manual and I have finished but for one word which I can't find anywhere. The word is "Anreibsilber" which I think might roughly translate as soldering flux (the context is a tecnical document involving electronics and soldering). Does anyone have a decent dictionary and could look this one up for me? I've tried Google, Yahoo, Babelfish etc but haven't found a decent translation of this word so far.
That sounds close, a co-worker of mine (a Brit) is a mechanic so if you don't come up with the right translation by Monday I'll ask him then.

I just searched the word Anreibsilber for everything in German language and not much comes up. What I did find sounds like some sort of liquid silver which can be applied to metal objects giving them a silver plated look.
I think this is "spelt" (or silver solder); used in electrical work, it is a "hard solder"
and is an alloy of copper and zinc.
I think this is what you are looking for.
(Solder flux is not the same; this is used for the cleaning of the surfaces prior to soldering. I think borax is normally used when soldering with spelt, because of the high temperatures involved)

He gave me a variation of what vwild1 said, that it's silver (liquid?) that can be transferred onto other surfaces, to silverplate them, or to seal them. For sealing however, it's a very costly option, there are better ways of doing things. Must go and now listen with animation and interest while he tells me all about the other ways...

It does appear to be used in soldering and plating.
It's not a brand name, I already checked that and the product is available froma number of different stores. As far as I'm able to decipher so far it either a solder flux (which now seems less likely) or a type of special solder used where high quality joints are essential (sounds like an Amsterdam coffee shop) and it's an expensive product. I'm still searching for the exact english equivalent but narrowing down the chase to something like somethingsilver solder
What I sometime do is translate back the other way to confirm something that seems a bit vague. BabelFish translates Silver Solder to Silbernes LoĢtmittel
