Anyone know how to remove Delta from my laptop?

I am so annoyed as this Delta thing has appeared as a search engine since I tried to download a movie player, and I have read that it can be quite harmful (I have Windows 7).

I have googled how to remove it and have come up with a site called Zimbio, which runs an uninstall programme. Does anyone know if this site is to be trusted please and, if so, should I run the uninstall programme? (I have heard so many horror stories ).

Use System Restore to "roll back" your computer to a point before you installed the software?

OK - um, how do I do that?

Let me back up- do you have a Windows computer? If so, which version?

I assume you've tried the uninstall program utility through the control panel? I wouldn't download anything specific to install something else.

Missed that part...

Start Menu, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore.

To be fair, I added the Windows 7 bit as an afterthought.

I have opened the Control Panel but can't see uninstall - is included under a different heading?

Sorry, I added it later, and thanks!

You might not want to deal with the "virus" (or whatever it is) yourself... Especially if you go to the first "website" claiming to have anti removal tools.

Start by describing properly the "delta thing".

What is the name?

Give details.

Right, I'll be assuming that your "delta thing" is actually a browser hijacker, adding something like a toolbar search thing.

I found that:

There are several ways to remove Delta Search hijacker;

if you see a program in Control Panel Add and Remove programs, uninstall it from there;

Check browser extensions of all the Internet browsers installed on your computer and remove everything related to Delta Search from there;

If you see any unfamiliar browser extensions, remove them. In many cases browser hijackers tend to be named under anything else but the name they use as web address promoted.

Yet the quickest and safest way to remove Delta Search is by using special antivirus programs. Before performing a system scan with the program you have, check if it can detect and remove adware and browser hijackers, because some don't. I can recommend .... It is effective with many unwanted applications.

If you need to change your search provider manually, here is how to do it:

On Internet explorer:

Click arrow on the right of search box

Do following: On IE8-9 choose Manage Search providers, On ie7 click change search defaults.

Delete Delta Search from the list

Reset home page as well

On Firefox :

Enter “about :config” in url bar. This will open settings page

Type “Keyword.url” in the search box. Right click it & reset it.

Type “browser.search.defaultengine” in the search box. Right click it & reset it.

Type “browser.search.selectedengine” in the search box. Right click it & reset it.

Search for ‘browser.newtab.url’. Right-click and reset. This will make sure that the search page won’t launch on each new tab.

Search for other things referring Delta Search in the list

Delta Search might affect some setting files in Firefox.

On Google Chrome:

Click wench icon on browser toolbar

Select Settings

Select Basics ->Manage Search engines

Remove Delta Search from list

Go back to settings. On Startup choose open blank page ( you can remove Delta Search from the set pages link too).

Delta Search might affect some setting files in chrome as well.

For future references, install SpyBot:

Some tutorial here; it seems mega long but it's actually simple, start program, start scan, remove ticked things, over.

Thanks guys, I did a system restore and it seems to have removed Delta. I will try SpyBot Corsebou - thanks!

It has not actually "removed" delta, it has restore your system to a previous state where delta was not installed...

It's like "back in the past", rather than removing anything.

So you know, that doing a restore, you also reverted any changes you voluntary made since then.

For Spybot, try version 1.6, I just installed 2.0 and it's quite new, and seems rather complex and tricky for newcomers. They ask many questions, annoy, etc...

I am still having one or two niggles with my laptop. One technician recommended formatting it ... this worries me a bit though.

I have googled and cannot find a definite answer to my query, namely, how much will I lose with a reformat? I have backed up all my data but am worried about losing all of my applications and the technician didn't seem to be 100% sure either (apart from Firefox, Windows and Office).

Any software not originally installed on the laptop will need to be reinstalled.

Spybot 1.6.2 is the best version:

What kind of technician can not tell if you will lose your data and applications after a formatting???

Anyway, i'd certainly ignore this "suggestion" and describe the issue(s) so they can be fixed.

Thanks guys. Hmmmm, this is my local technician (in Malta) ... very helpful and willing, but ...

I think I will just ask him to eradicate a couple of troublesome applications and leave the rest as they are. Just too risky otherwise to go for a full reformat.
