Please, can someone tell me where I can go to get hair done in Geneva? Are there any stylists who do african/black hair? I did a search and couldn't find the info I needed for the Geneva area. When I say "do african hair", I'm referring to a variety of options so even if they do only one of the styles I'm about to mention, please feel free to tell me about them anyway.
By varieties, I mean any salons/stylists that can straighten black hair (either through relaxing the hair or through using a straigtening comb) or do braids (all kinds, from cornrows to micros to twists, etc...).
Now, I also understand that the names for the styles differ, depending on the region so if there's any confusion as to the terms I use, let me know and I can send pictures of what I mean.
Anyway, all of that was just simply to ask, "Peeps (people), where can a girl get her hair done"?
The first one is a "Traditional" stylist judging by the window display, the second is quite trendy. I don't think I've seen the third, but it sounds promising.
There must be others listed in the "Coiffure, salons de" section of the Yellow Pages under fancier names if you take the time to look!
Your best bet for Lausanne is to go to one of the African shops (close to the city centre) and ask. I have had to be quite self-sufficient when it comes to my hair, as some pokey little salon in Zurich informed me that the price of braids and weaves STARTED FROM CHF 1000! I laughed and walked out.
CHF 1000!! scary! That means when i move to Bern, i will need to do my own hair?Maybe i should travel with my own relaxer from South Africa?By the way, im bi-racial and i use relaxers on my hair...
A nice salon in Ferney Voltaire named Elsy HAIR - Be careful there are two salons, don't miss this one, the other one is very bad and non professional.
I've gone to get my haircut in Elsy HAIR Salon twice now, shelly is just amazing and really a nice hairdresser.
After years of being stuck with the same hairstyle but never be able to envision what would work for a new cut. I went to Elsy HAIR for something new. She worked with me and listened to my thoughts and suggest me some advices.
Then magic, she made it lovely. for the first time near Geneva, i paid less and i am happy with my new hair.
Thank you so much, in my work they also love my hair.
here the contact of the salon if you would like to try 0033450992359 - it is 15 minutes far from Geneva- They speak French and English.
I'm new to EF and I have a similar question about African/Caribbean hair care. I'm not really looking for a hair stylist but rather hair care products. I know that most salons (probably) offer basic products but are there any stores in the area that specialize in beauty supply/black haircare products? If so, please let me know
Oh, and I heard lots of great things about the Sunshine Hair Salon (Blvd. James-Fazy 8 Geneva 1201).
Thanks for continuing this thread and for the recommendation. I too am interested in hair care products as well as salons. I'm moving to the Rolle / Lausanne area in July. I have Afro-American chemically straightened (relaxed) hair and 2 bi-racial daughters (thick, curly hair).
In Geneva and Lausanne, there is Inside Africa ( http://www.insideafrica.ch/ ). They have a wide selection of products, hairs and other supplies. In Geneva, it's on Rue de Berne. In Lausanne, it's just outside the train station.
In Geneva, you also have AfriKana (just across the street from Inside Africa) and Afrimplex, also down the street from the above two stores on Rue de Berne.
As for hair salons, I can't give you much advice. With hair salons, it's different, you'll have to shop around to finally find a place and "the person" (I say the person because it's the person and the service that finally allows you have some sense of satisfaction between the hair you get done and the quality of the hairstyle). In Geneva, I wouldn't say that it's about the best salons as much as it is about the best place for you, depending on the relationship you establish. Yes, you can say this principle applies no matter where you go, but it is particularly important in Geneva. I tried to get my hair done at Sunshine which always gets rave reviews but although it is always packed, it was always hard to get in and I didn't find their service so professional. That is just me though, you have to discover them for yourselves since they must be doing something right, with its popularity and reviews.
Finding a hair salon that does African hair is not hard, they are all over the place but the above advice will influence where you finally go.
The big Carrefour in Ferney have a very small ethnic hair product selection in the Hair/Shampoo section with relaxers, hair conditioner and moisturizers. Other than that I stock up in the UK or buy off Ebay. Have never used a salon as I do my hair myself or when in the UK. I do this only because I don't know enough French to explain what and how I want it done. I have noticed 3 or 4 ethnic hair places in Paquis (Rue de Bern) and Servette but for the life of me can't recall their names.
