Does anyone know if there's an art gallery in Lausanne or thereabouts? I've Googled, but only found details of the one with art by psychos, etc (Art Brut).
I'm looking for a more conventional one, somewhere with hushed gallery 'atmosphere', enormous canvases, that sort of thing.
It doesn't have to have paintings by anyone famous.
Unfortunately I don't know Lausanne, but some of the travel websites around might be good. There are also many forums on the web that might already have this info:
Do you know about the city of Lausanne website ? It's a great resource for just about anything you could possibly want to know about the area from both a practical and recreational perspective.
I'd also suggest that you check out Art Brut sometime. I'm not a gallery type by any stretch of the imagination, but I liked this one. Many people are turned off by the idea that the art is created by mentally ill or marginalized people, but it is fascinating and surprisingly beautiful.
Thanks for the useful links - the Museum of Fine Arts is just the sort of thing I was looking for.
The Art Brut does sound really interesting, but this time round I was looking for something to take the kids to (my son's going through a 'copy drawing' stage, and I thought he may like to see an actual painting in situ, buy a postcard, and have a bash), and a couple of reviews of Art Brut suggested it's perhaps not something for children.
I'll go on my own/ with hubby sometime, and see if it would just lead to too many difficult conversations if we took the kids!
Thanks again - lots of useful 'fill up the school holiday' suggestions here for me.
Musee d'Elysee (elysee.ch) is an important photography museum. For art museums with scope (from old masters to contemporary) the permanent collections of the Beaux Arts ( http://www.beaux-arts.vd.ch/ ) in Lausanne, the Art & History museum in Geneva ( http://www.ville-ge.ch/mah/ ) and the Kunsthaus (kunsthaus.ch) in Zürich would be ideal.
The Museum of Art Brut is actually quite a nice museum to bring kids to. I have 3 boys, now 7 and twins who are 5, and I have been bringing them for years - no awkward discussions. In fact, during the school year, the Museum holds special sessions for kids with a tour followed by an "atelier" for them to create something based on the exposition they have just seen. These are usually for kids above 6. Look on the site www.lausanne.ch , then "Events" and then search by the theme "Enfants".
I have not been myself, but my parents-in-law took my kids to the Fondation Giannada in Martigny ( www.gianadda.ch ) which they very much enjoyed.
Also something I would like to do, a bit further away in Berne, is this: http://www.kunstmuseumbern.ch/index....28&SID=7&DID=9 . My mother-in-law is an art history teacher and she has heard great things about this atelier for kids (from 6 up) in the Kunstmuseum in Berne.
My kids also do a weekly art class during the school year that is great. They do everything from aquarelle, to clay sculpture, papier macher, gouache, etc. It is at Terre de Sienne (av. Juste Olivier). It is quite pricey, but the stuff the kids produce is really amazing.
I just went to the Lausanne Historical Museum and it is a good place to take kids. It is located in the Place de la Cathedrale opposite the entrance to the Cathedral (you can get a twofor if you are not too exhausted). The building itself has parts dating back to the 11th century and it traces the history of Lausanne through the ages and the relations between the Canton of Vaud and other cantons, especially Berne. There is a huge model of the town with a lighted display that would fascinate kids.
Of course all the displays are labeled in French but there are English leaflets available that give some limited information.
Best of all it is free entrance on the first Saturday of the month.
