Art history in Switzerland???

Hey

I'm currently looking for Universities in Switzerland that offers a BA in art history, but I can't seem to find any? There MUST be somewhere I can take my degree...preferably in the south of Geneva (the french or Italian part), but that doesn't matter in the first place.

Hope to hear from someone

Cecilia

Hi and welcome to the forum. Berne and Zurich both are offering it (German speaking, however), Lausanne as well.

As for South of Geneva: There is only France!

If you don't mind a private university, Lugano has Franklin College. It offers the liberal arts curriculum of as much as possible. It's a pretty small school and costs far, far more than Swiss universities. As a student there I can tell you the experience is certainly pretty good, and you graduate in three or four years depending on the workload you're willing to shoulder.

Here's the link if you want to take a look:

If it really interests you, the admissions department is more than happy to give you a tour and introduce you to students.

Perhaps there are some continuing education programs that you can take at some of the institutions such as the Kunsthaus in either Zurich or Basel; you can also inquire at the Beyeler Foundation. Good luck!

Incidentally, I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art History.

Basel University also offer degrees in History of Art.

The Eikones in Basel might be right up your alley but it's extremely advanced, masters/doctorate level even I think.

Took part in a cycle of conferences there in 2008. It was amazing, almost made me want to drop everything to join the school.

Classes are in french/german/english; yes, no, maybe.

I believe a good, if not perfect, command of these languages is a must.

The school also happens to be in what I believe to be the oldest university in Switzerland dating back to 1200-1300?!

The location is very central, imagine seeing the Rhine river from your classroom

add Schule fur Gestaltung Basel to the list

these are more hands on schools specializing in object design, graphic design, art but they may have theory courses

Lausanne Ecal

Geneva Head (look at the hesge circuit, there may be something in there closer to what you are interested in)

I tried to get into Lausanne back in 2003 and miserably failed. I know people who have been there and love the school.

The head school in Geneva is also top level, consider both of these schools as being in competition with each other.

Worked on a project with someone who teaches in Geneva and he was lovely. The profs from both of these schools are amazing
