Any pointers from artists where is the best place to buy art materials in the Zürich area? I am trying to work out if I should buy everything from the uk. So far paint etc...seems pricey here. Is there a good online store here or perhaps any stores near the German border?
Boesner has the best and most comprehensive selection of artists' materials. Try boesner.ch for the nearest one to you. They also have shops in Germany though I am not sure if they have one near enough to make a trip worthwhile. You can also buy from them online.
Ever since moving to Switzerland I've done all my art supply shopping online at www.gerstaecker.ch . Their price range is quite wide, some stuff seems really high-end (at least price-wise,) whereas their house brands are quite affordable IMHO.
Their customer service is not always on top of things when something goes wrong, or maybe I'm just too used to a nice 'customer is always right' mentality... But they do deliver quick and usually nothing goes wrong.
I thought I should update my findings on where to find art materials and see if anyone else can add to the list as I am sure lots of places are hidden in Zürich.
Hornbach - 8854 Galgenen - good basic selection and good prices
Deck for work - 8810 Horgen - small basic selection and pricey, more hobbycraft
Boesner - 8051 Zürich - excellent
Gerstaecker online store - excellent
Zumstein - 8001 Rennweg Zürich - good for being central location
Thanks for posting the stores you've discovered. I've been searching for art supplies as well as crafty things, such as fabrics and embroidery supplies, to no avail. Mind you, I have a toddler which makes searching more difficult. So your list is a great jumping board for me to start.
An older post I realize, but I thought I would add another swiss online shop for art supplies (paints, canvases, easels.. sadly no "crafty" stuff).
Their service (order and delivery) has been excellent and the quality of their pre-made canvases and brushes really good. I have bought their own brand of acrylic paints (the jury is still out on that - some of the coverage of some of the pigments has been a little weak). Their prices seem ok.
