Hey guys
I'm just to ask a question that's been worrying me. I want to be an au pair for someone's family (girlfriend's family). They've agreed to sign the contract and do the paperwork and everything, and I would legally be working under them if we can find an agency that will pair us up.
Of course, the agencies don't need to know that I'm in a relationship with someone from the host family, but I was wondering whether it would affect my chances at getting a visa at all?
Same with, well, staying with her. After I finish my year as an au pair (I'm from eastern russia), I'm not sure whether I'd be allowed to get a legal partnership with her if her parents are the ones who hired me (assuming we both still want this). She's over 18, so legally she's an adult, but I don't know if it does or doesn't make a difference.
Can anyone clarify this for me? Nothing online gives me any info on that kind of situation.
Thank you,
i forgot to clarify but we're both girls
If you are of proper age and they have kids younger than 18 and all paperwork is done according to the rules and you never ever mention the relationship to the agency's there's no reason to assume this would not be possible next year.
Since you are from a non-eu country it will not work out anymore in 2017 since they already reached the maximum amount of working permits for non EU people for 2017
So given that there's enough time to arrange everything for next years application just contact an Seco recognised agency and follow up with them for all the paperwork.
hey thanks for the reply!
yeah we already knew that it'd have to happen next year.
are you talking about the partnership, or the application for the au pair itself, for when you say that it should be possible?
thanks again
The question is what have you been doing in Switzerland up to now? If au pairing for someone else then no, it’s not possible since the permit cannot be extended. Also what age are you? Non-EU au pairs must be between the ages of 18 and 25.
“The Law on Foreign Nationals, in force since 1 January 2008, has introduced the following changes:
Au pairs from third countries (e.g. USA, Canada, Thailand, etc.) can only receive permits if they are placed through an agency which is approved and licensed by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). Currently there are only few such agencies specialising in the placement of au-pairs (e.g. pro filia). However, we expect the number to increase throughout the year. Au pairs may now be placed only if they are between 18 to 25 years old.”
What nationality is the family? Same as yours? Not possible.
Do they speak a Swiss language fluently? If not, again not possible since the main aim of an au pair is to learn and experience Swiss language and culture - hence the requirement to attend a Swiss language course.
Do they have any other younger children? If not, again not possible.

As for legal partnership, she would need to show she earns enough to support you both and that her accommodation is big enough for both of you.
Requirements, depending on whether she’s EU or not.

I was talking about the au-pair part, i take it that there's only few 18 yr old ones who have the housing and the income to let a partner come over.
After your au-pair period the partnership is a completely different thing, if the au-pair period goes well you basically have a year to find out about all and seek the place and income to realise this, it's all possible but don't expect it to just happen without sweat, tears and some cursing.
hey thanks for the reply
I've never been to switzerland and never done an au pair job before.
I'm 24, her family is Swiss (I'm russian), her family speaks french and english and they have a 12 and a 15 year old.
and yeah for the legal partnership, she's already got a job, so we'll both have enough next year hopefully.
ah I guess I should add she's 21 lol
You really want to work for your "In-laws"?
Why not apply to be an au-pair for a different family in the same area? Then you won't have any family/work issues and no questions from the Swiss authorities.
Well, main thing will be to get it arranged before your 26th birthday - otherwise you’re outside the age limit for non-EU national au pairs. And of course finding an agency like Perfect Way or Profilia who’ll do the paperwork.
It all sounds a bit complicated to me though. If you want to spend time here with your girlfriend and her parents are willing to foot the bill why do they not just invite you for a visit?

You could possibly be here for up to 3 months which should give you a good idea if the relationship will work out long term.
