Audi oil change - 'you only pay for liquids'

Hi there

I have an Audi Q2, less than a year old. When I bought it, much was made of the free* servicing at the dealer, with only having to pay for liquids.

Having booked a service at an official Audi dealer (not AMAG, but a concessionaire officielle), they mentioned the price to be 250 - 300CHF.

I was outraged, as the car needs 4L of motor oil.

Am I missing something here? Is it only AMAG that provides this 'free' service? 4L of oil should cost not even half of that price, with a generous markup.

I wonder if that price is right?

*nothing is ever free

Never had to pay for the first services nor any oil. Even going to an authorised garage and not Amag I did not have to pay anything. First 3 or 4 years or 100000 kilometers should be free.

We have had three Volvos over the years on a Swiss Premium deal which includes free services (but not the cost of the liquids) for 10 years or 100k kms.

Normally we end up paying around 150 swissies a year for these services which I think is a good deal seeing as they clean the car and throw in an extra year Volvo breakdown and recovery which we have used on a couple of occasions.

Doesn't sound like a good deal if you had to use it... 😳

My wife's Audi TT, bought 6 months old from a small Audi garage, was provided with an extended "Audi Care" package that went for 12000km (IIRC). Yes, all services were free, except for fluids and other consumables (brake pads, tyres, etc.).

Yes, the price a main dealer charges for oil is exorbitant, but it's worth bearing in mind that their quote may also include brake fluid, washer fluid, gearbox oil and others.

Next time ask if you can provide the fluids yourself. 5w40 fully synth oil should be available, even at Swiss prices, from around chf40 for a 5 litre bottle. And certainly you should always fill the screen washer fluid yourself, and tell them not to refill it - they charge stupid prices for that too, and not just for what they actually use. Similarly for wiper blades, easily self-changed even by a mechanical numpty.

I've always done that - never tried it with oil, though, but once out of the free dealer service it, like all my other vehicles since I've been here, has been serviced at a small local garage who I trust, and who don't overcharge like that.

"official" oil at official dealers is often very expensive, but 62,50/75,00 a liter is even for them a total rip off.

Are you sure this does not include filters?

Filters were always included in the Audi Care package when we were doing it, albeit a few years ago now.

Take your own oil... it's a known problem that Swiss dealers charge a fortune for it. In the end they are lean businesses that will try and screw you for every penny that they legitimately and legally can.

Same deal and similar price with our BMWs. It includes all fluids, so like others have said, ensure you fill everything that you feel comfortable filling. (Window washer, AddBlue)

Err flat battery, flat tyre etc

Never happened to you?

Not since about 1994, no.

So you don't drive that many klicks then...

Anyway, in the land of where everything is insured I am happy to have the cover included in my service for free.

Seems a lot. I've just got the bill for my 'free' service from Mercedes today and it was just over CHF 500 to cover 9 litres of oil, washer fluid, wiper blades, changing the battery in the remote, changing the tyres and a free clean inside and out.

It's done less than 7,000km, so a little hacked off that they did the wiper blades for the best part of CHF 100. They'll be told to leave that off next time! Frankly if they want to charge me CHF 7 for washer fluid, but throw in a clean I don't mind. For me taking your own oil is a sure fire way to ensure you don't build up any goodwill.

True, but I have brought him the old oil from my bikes until the commune started having a place for old engine oil!

I do bring my own tires, and some other stuff, especially if he bitches about the prices he has to pay and suggests that I find a cheaper source, sometime even for him! (like the time the importer wanted CHF 700 for a fuel pump assembly for a motorcycle, that just had a bad pump, and I found him a new pump for CHF 40, now THAT builds up goodwill!)

Hi Mate, i had this too with my Audi Q2 when it had a service last xmas. Same thing happened. The small print on the Audi website does state that fluids are not included. Mine was around 300 with a car hire for the day. I think prices differ dealer to dealer. They do in the UK, they are all franchises after all.

Normally you will get oil and filter change, all wipers changed, washer fluid and pollen filter. All labour is "free"! would like to know how much that would be though, at an indy and Audi just to see how much the free part costs...

You do know that the shortest book ever written is The Auto Dealer Guide to Honest Business Ethics

Yeah, but you do build a healthy bank balance
