Australian 'P' license

any australian on the forum who knows how it works with "P" platers ?

I suspect there is no "P" license equivalent in Switzerland, but for those

who don't know it is a license one gets after successfully completing the "L" (learners) license. it's not same as full license but one can drive with it unsupervised. first you get red "P" and year later green "P", another year later

you get full license. there are only minor differences between full and "P", i.e. max speed limit on freeway is 100km/h for "P" platers and 110km/h for full license drivers, or "P" platers are not allowed to consume any alcohol before driving. yes, that's right - if you have a full license you can drink (to some extent) and drive.

sounds like how it is in Canada... learners... then a GDL licence... then after an amount of time (person has to be 18, and had GDL for a year), they can take the drivers test again to get the GLD taken off...

Alas, I don't know fully how it works in Aussie land (I think it is the same as I described for Canada...), so, I can't help you. Actually, I found the question a little to general to understand what you were asking...

Though if you can clarify it to me, I could find out for you. I have friends/family in Australia...

good point ! that's because I forgot to ask the question , sorry.

here it goes :

can an Australian "P" license holder drive a car unsupervised in Switzerland ?

"P" license is the intermediate step between "L" (learner) and full unrestricted license. a person gets "P" license only under these conditions :

- he/she passed a knowledge test

- held the "L" license for at least 1 year and did not commit any

traffic offences whatsoever

- is at least 18 years of age

- has completed a minimum of 50 hours driving supervised (these must be

logged in a logbook and sign for by a supervising person)

- finally, has passed the driving test

from that point onwards, "P" license holder can drive unsupervised, but it's

not another 2 years before he/she gets the full license (there is a red "P" for 1 year and then green "P" for another year).

so the question again, would a "P" license holder be allowed to drive a vehicle in Switzerland unsupervised ?

Heya

The answer is yes, an Australian P plater Can drive without any problem in Switzerland. In Switzerland they do not have a P Plate and therefore do not really rocognise it as anything other than normal driving license. Though I am of the understanding that some of the restrictions do still apply ie alcohol, and towing a trailer.

When I arrived in Switzerland I Hqad( and still have ) an Australian P plate license and drove around here without any problems until I changed/applied for a Swiss license where they gave me a full Swiss license ( no tests taken apart from the eye test). Be aware though that within one year of being in Switzerland - even if you dont drive - you do need to apply for a Swiss license.

If in doubt though I think the best thing would be to contact the " Strassenvehrkehrsamt" (The equivilent of VicRoads etc) in the area where you plan on staying/living.

Hope this has helped

Enjoy

thanks a lot katie,

this was very helpful response.

(now, can somebody explain how to add to someone's reputation or is this functionality just disabled for newbies ?)

You need a certain number of posts before you have the ability to add to someones reputation. Not sure how many though. But, the way to do it is on the right had side of each post in a thread there is a balance, next to a warning sign. If you have enough posts to add to someones reputation you just click on the balance thing-y and go from there.

I see.

the "libra" is available just for my user name, but wouldn't allow me to add to my own reputation either

No problems at all

Enjoy
