AVS number asked at new job offer

Hi everyone,

I haven't found the answer to my question in the forum, I hope I haven't missed it somewhere.

I am an EU citizen and I have recently received a job offer in Geneva. I have been asked for my AVS number, but I haven't got one, as I have freeballed my stay in Switzerland so far (I've been here for less than three months). Is that number one I need to get by my own means or is it one I get through the work permit? I have been searching the public websites but the information is confusing and I am not sure to what degree I need to involve my future employer.

My first employer applied for it for me. Just tell them you don’t have one yet as you’ve not worked here yet.

You can also ask your health insurer, it should be written on your health insurance card, starts with 756
