Baby massage oil

Wondering which oil do I have to use for giving my baby a body massage !! Any recommendations on brands in Switzerland ?

Just use Baby Oil.

Weleda has manufactured oils (they call natural) http://www.weleda.ch/produkt/c/calen...FZUYGwodKjABvA but if nature has pure oils...then that's far better in my opinion (Udo Erasmus). I am using apricot kernel oil on wet skin...we are all just older babies

We used Nivea or Johnson & Johnson

I'm sure they are all fine and it's more personal taste than anything else.

Nothing to get too concerned about...

I believe it's best NOT to use produce, which isn't natural - what you put on your body get's taken up - it all ends up in the blood for the body to process...do you want Nivea or Johnson blood

We used the Weleda oil which was very pleasant, but I think also contained not only almond oil, but some kind of other vergetable oil. If you want the best in that "natural" direction , get almond oil from a pharmacy or drogerie. It ́s expensive , but you need so little for a baby...

I'm a fan of Mustela. I'm just addicted to their products, it's my very own Proustian madeleine

That being said sweet almond oil is commonly used in CH. it can be bought in any pharmacy.

Johnson and Johnson.

I don't want almond blood or apricot kernel blood either if it comes to that.

But it doesn't come to that, because I have SKIN to separate my insides from my outsides.

As long as the OP's baby has skin too she should be fine.

Too bad you're not closer: I have an almost new container that I'm about to throw out because I never use it and with my upcoming move, I need all of the space I can get.

I would prefer something really natural. Might take a look on both sweet almond oil and welda products. Thanks all for the inputs :-)

Extra virgin olive oil - natural, pure, albeit a bit smelly.

What a BS. Sorry, I respect other people's opinions but remarks like this are just stupid and of no value for parents with babies on the way.

And terrible for skin. Especially infant skin where the dermis hasn't yet formed properly. But nevermind - if is natural it has to be good, right.

Not really. Baby's skin is much less protective than adult skin and isn't properly formed in the early years, and especially in the first year. There is a reason they have very soft skin!

That said, I don't think that "natural" is by default best. At least Johnson & Johnson have actually done and experiments and published data to back their products, unlike the "natural" Waledas of this world. And what could me more natural that mineral oils extracted from the earth after millennia of purification?

Substances do enter our bodies through skin absorption. Chemicals can diffuse through the skin and be taken up into the bloodstream. This is how the birth control patch works, for example.

Personal and baby care products may contain known or suspect carcinogens and endocrine-disruptive compounds. You can check product safety on this database: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/browse/baby+oil/

Better to put something on your body that you wouldn't mind putting into your body. For example, olive, coconut, and sesame oils. Indeed, the weleda baby oil is sesame oil with calendula extract. Johnson's and Nivea baby oils are petroleum-derived.

My recommendation is bio sesame oil, which you can find in coop.

Just dip them in a deep fat fryer. You're gonna cook and eat with that oil, so it has to be top quality and healthy. As a bonus they might smell like fish&chips if you've used the oil recently.

Hi There,

As someone who has a background in essential oils & home made skin creams,

I would recommend:

Organic Coconut oil (*) with - Organic Lavender (is 1 of the only 2 essential oils which are safe and gentle for babies) essential oil in the following measurement:

1 drop of organic Lavender essential oil per 1 table spoon of Organic Coconut oil.

For dry and or a bit rough, flaky skin you could also use

Organic Cocoa butter and or Organic Shea butter creme with a bit of honey- works also great for adults :-)

PM me if you want the recipe to make this.

And of course Weleda is a really good brand, for those who don't have the time to make their own skin care.

Success and enjoy massage time with your child :-)

* You could also use Organic -Jojoba, almond, apricot kernel oil, although those are a bit more pricier.

Irrelevant example: skin patches are DESIGNED to deliver treatments through the skin.

You should not assume that everything you put on your skin will get through.

You should not assume that everything natural is better.

This is a quick search - and there is more out there. In this publication they found sunflower seed oil to be OK.

The oil used by J&J, yes is a derivative of oil, but is an inert carbon chain that comes from a purification process, so is not "manufactured" at all. It works by being an additional protective barrier trapping in moisture.

As much as the natural crew don't want to believe or accept this fact, it can be considered just as natural as plant derived products - unless you believe the fairies deliver the bulk materials on the petals of flowers to the natural companies who deliver them to shops on unicorn-drawn carts.

This message should come with a health warning: that the temperature of the fat should be kept at 37°C...

How much value oils can have (may be too much for some, who prefer the research of Johnson and Johnson, Nestlé etc. ($$$ ))... if applied http://justalist.blogspot.ch/2008/03...ency-list.html

I'm shore, babies, mums and dads are all on a journey well worth investing in quality time

Our midwife recommended Grapeseed Oil....readily available from the supermarket
