babysitting, how much?

we will be parents in a short while and we are looking for a babysitter.

How much does it cost?

Do you know any agency or somebody that you can recommend me?

thank you in advance

Hello, welcome to the forum

When they are little (0-6 months) you can usually take the babies to a restaurant with you. Movies are more difficult, but they do have Nuggi-kino for the die-hard: http://www.nuggi.ch/A_Box_Stadt/Box_...atheNuggi.html

When you are willing to leave your little one with a sitter, the local rule of thumb is 1CHF per Schoolyear - so if you have a 15 yr old sitting, he would be paid 9CHF/hr as he is usually in the 9th school year.

If you get someone who is a qualified childcare worker, from a cresh or something, they usually ask about 25CHF/hr.

thanks!!

It also depends if the sitter has the red cross babysitting certificate. This means they were at least trained in the very basics. I would also consider the experience a sitter brings with him/her. When I was 15 I had quite a lot of experience and people were glad about that so paid more.

Where I live the going rate is 20-25 francs an hour!

We signed up in familienzentrum to get a list of red cross certified Babysitters. I think it costs around 40chf. They found one for us who lives in our village. She ́s only 13 yo but my kids(Ages 9 and 2) love her. We pay her 10chf/hour but always adding extra.

About a year ago when we didnt know about this red cross list, we paid 25/hour but we dont regret it because back then my son was a high needs baby, we couldnt trust a young babysitter for an Infant.

13 seems very young to be left with kids, I ahve to say I am surprised they can get red cross cert at that age.

Yes, youngest possible is 13, we are her first experience. At first we were hesitant as well so we did it one step at a time, letting her come over to watch the Kids while we were at home. Leaving her 2 hrs only and staying Close to the area. We ask her to come usually for dinner, then after 2 hrs its bedtime for the Kids anyway. We tried other Babysitters but she was our(the kids ́) favorite. I would say, she is quite mature for her age.

There was an 18 yo who smoked at our balcony while babysitting and smoked while taking our Kids for a walk as well. I think this 13 yo is more responsible than the 18 yo.

The minimum age for the Red Cross babysitting service in Neuchatel is 14. It's 12 hours of training which includes changing a baby, feeding kids and loads of other stuff.

It may be different in other cantons.

Our son did it and the neighbours pay him 14 chf per hour for babysitting their kids . He's nearly 15.

The minimum rate is 10chf an hour for babysitters less than 18 years old and 12 chf for older sitters.

Thanks for the posts. We're in a similar situation so this was very helpful! Always difficult to know what the etiquette is these situations in an unfamiliar city.

Here (in St. Gallen) it is 20 CHF per hour for the experienced adult babysitter.

You can also find "emergency babysitting" - 2-3 hours in some private kinderkrippe (a bit cheaper)

You can ask here: The "Mütter- und Väterberatung" is for free and they have all the important and helpful addresses. For Zurich see here (scroll down and open the pdf "Alle städtischen....") and here .

After the birth you can go there and ask your 1000 questions, too :-) And you can weigh and measure your baby and get in touch with other new moms.

And this is the site for CH: http://www.muetterberatung.ch/MVB/index.htm

Thanks for all the replies here, I'm getting a bit chummy with my German tutor and after she mentioned she had a 14yo daughter, I've been thinking about asking if she would like to babysit for us sometime in the future.... 15 per hour would be an attractive offer? (to look after a 5yo and a 7yo so no feeding or changing required!)

15 chf per hour would be very generous. She would be very happy with that I should imagine.

10-12 chf for a 14 year old is about average but I would always happily pay a bit extra for somebody I knew and trusted.

How judgmental you are! Possibly other parent are simply not as paranoid as you?!

My local teenager neighbour does a very good job of keeping an eye on my 3 kids during my occasional evenings out. She plays with them and makes sure they don't set fire to the curtains, which is basically all I expect of her!

Pretty sure GC123 doesn't have kids!!

And obviously regretted posting it. ( not before it was quoted though and is still visible for everyone to see).

There is a huge difference between a full time/ nanny type of carer and somebody who comes in for a few hours while the parents go out for a bit ( often when the children are in bed anyway).

There are a lot if very responsible teenage babysitters around and the Red Cross

course if they do it gives them excellent training on what to do in the event of an emergency etc ( even gives lessons on nappy changing)
