this is probably only known by a few of you, but I am looking everywhere to get "Oblaten" for baking. I want to make my own Lebkuchen (Gingerbread), which I guess is typically German?
Anybody ever seen them here in Switzerland? They look like this :
Germany. I never saw them in Switzerland and I looked for them in a number of shops around the lake. All of the Edeka shops in Germany seemed to carry them though. I wish I would have brought back a big box of them as they're a bit difficult to find around Boston.
Never seen those in a Swiss store. But i highly doubt that you will found it near the tin foil as it is edible and perishable. Better do a shopping trip over the boarder Waltshut and Konstanz are near Zurich and both reachable through public transportation if needed. You may also stock up on Marzipan, decoration, and other stuff while there.
Thank you al for the answers! It is really unfortunate that there arent any around as I have already bought everything for the Lebkuchen :P Any idea what could be used instead? Or do I need them at al? Could I just bake them on baking paper?
Depends on the recipe. The ones that require the oblaten are 'elisen' lebkuchen so if you avoid recipes for elisenlebkuchen or sometimes Nürnberger lebkuchen, you should be able to forego the wafer. I use my mom's recipe and the one time I used baking paper without the wafer I was left chewing the cookie off the paper (though they were still delicious).
I had never heard of Oblaten before either, but I was in the Post Office today and they had "Hello Kitty" baking sets there for sale with Oblaten!, the word jumped out at me as it is the second time I had seen it, your reference being the first.
I don't know what is all involved in the set or even if it is worth considering ( I thought if there is a Hello Kitty logo on them, just reverse them so it doesn't show, should you choose to buy the set to use), anyway, just to let you know, there are Oblaten here in Switzerland.
Such a funny word, Oblaten, I think I may need to get to the bottom of it, I have an Etymology reference, bookmarked somewhere, must have a look.
That's so incredibly nice of you to offer! We're heading to the North Pole in a week (and the joy of -30C - why I couldn't have married a guy from somewhere warm...), literally, so we won't be here and I'm putting the lebkuchen off until next year as I've just been too busy to really make them. Cook's Illustrated has a lebkuchen bar cookie recipe that I might try that doesn't require oblaten, but it doesn't have any nuts in it either so I'm a bit suspicious. Enjoy Maine for Christmas! Around the 16th it's supposed to get wicked cold so maybe there'll be snow this year, too.
I was thinking Communion wafers! I'm not even Catholic so I am giving me extra points for that, smirk , German would probably be Auflegen which is what these things are, I'm getting way off on my own little tangent here, and should probably take my medicine now, but, every now and again, little obscurities tickle my fancy and I have to investigate, cheers.
I live in a little town where they have just taken split peas off the shelves in the Migros ( now how in the blimmen heck am I supposed to make my pea and ham soup!!!? ), but have frigging Hello Kitty baking sets with Oblaten!?
I am having a little ponder about the state of the world these days...
Hello Kitty Oblaten? Wow, that would be awesome I would do it with any Oblaten really :P And you saw them in a Post Office? Well, I was actually planning on making Elisen-Lebkuchen, but now I guess that I really would need the Oblaten therefore... hmm... would it work with Eating Paper as well? I think I have seen some around from Hello Kitty as well, haha
Which ever one you can get hold of the easiest, I would go for, if I was you.
If you google esspapier schweiz, you will get quite a lot of hits for online ordering, so that may also be a possibility if you still have time. Good luck and have fun with or without your Oblaten
There are lots of Hello Kitty esspapier or Oblaten out there.
I am having a lot of fun with this word,,, Oblaten, Oblaten.....
