Baden as a adjective: German to English

Hi,

I am struggling with this specific question:

if something is from the German state of Baden, what is is the adjective form in English?

I have the German words stuck in my head for example, for a wine that comes from Baden in German you might say: ein Badische Wein

any ideas?

In German something from Baden is Badisch, and somebody from Baden is a Badenser or a Badener (there have been long and heated debates over which is right so I won't take sides)

In French Baden is calkled Bade and the adjective is Badois.

In English the historical state of Baden which existed until the 1870s or thereabouts is called the Grand Duchy of Baden (Grossherzogtum Baden). Today Baden does not exist as a political entity but is part of the federal state of Baden Württemberg which goes by the same name in English.

The region within that state that is called Baden is also called Baden in English.

I don't think there is a commonly used adjective that describes something from Baden. I think a wine from Baden would be a Baden wine rather than a Badener wine or something like that.

You probably have to keep it like it, as noun. "From Baden" or "Baden" added to the word:

The Baden dialect, weather in Baden, a good wine from Baden

die badische Mundart, das badische Wetter, ein guter badischer Wein .

Hi,

There is no direct translation of "badisch" in English. Instead, we would say "from the Baden region [in/of Germany]".

The noun is used as the adjective.

You would be quite OK to create an ending, following existing phonetic precedents

Gabon - Gabonese/Gabonian

Lebanon/Lebanese

Sudan/Sudanese

Sweden/Swedish

Baden Badenese/Badenian/Badish

All sound silly and would confuse. Therefore "...from Baden" is the most acceptable.

thanks everyone!! I have only 3 occurrences of this in my 10-page historical document so I can get a way with "from Baden"...

I would probably refer to a wine from Baden as a bad-ish wine.
