Does anyone know where I can find sodium bicarbonate in Vaud? (I live in Vevey and work in Montreux, so anything around there is particularly good).
My dictionary said bicarbonate de soude but when I asked about this in Migros one lady couldn't help me even after I described its uses in pidgin French, the other just rudely said I've no idea what you're talking about. Which really ruined my day.
In other countries I've lived in its a pretty standard thing to find in shops together with other cake ingredients, a bit odd it doesn't seem to be here, or am I really missing something?
You need to look for Natron in French in the supermarkets here. They sell it in the baking section often in small individual packets but I've also see it in bigger packets or tubs.
If you want bigger quantities then your best bet is to order it online or get it from a droguerie or even the pharmacy.
At Globus, in Lausanne, in the baking section on the ground floor. Regular sized containers (100g). The brand is Heritage and the containers say "bicarbonate of soda" and "baking powder", which is, obviously, baking soda and baking powder, respectively. Cost is 2 fr 80 per container.
