Balcony cover shade just collapsed

Uh oh. Before the snow I had raised my balcony shade curtain and essentially kept it up to protect what I had on the balcony. Well, it just collapsed, strong metal buckled, under the heavy snow. Who would pay for the repair? Had no idea this would happen!

You mean the one you roll out to keep the sun off? The ones that every time there's a storm someone asks who pays because the thing tore off?

If it's what I'm thinking of I'm afraid that's you. I think it comes under negligence. Depending on it's age you could be only paying for part of it.

Best of luck!

you probably should have rolled it up once it started snowing. It should be written in the contract tho.

You may can ask your home insurance to cover it? But they also could say its your fault.

It is your fault, you pay.

It really doesn't take a lot of snow to break stuff..

At new year I bought / built a gazebo thing for the garden, so we could party outside, bonfire etc.. It snowed off and on and I had to keep clearing snow from it .. At on point we went inside for an hour and came back out to this .. Catastrophe. .

The thing was check and the reviews on Galaxus did say it was crap.. It served it's purpose I suppose.

A shade curtain is supposed to last 15 years, with a bit of chance you will only be obliged to pay a fraction of the cost. How old is your building?

Thanks everyone. I was using it to protect what I had on my balcony. It was the metal arms that snapped - incredible. I didn't even think about the snow being so heavy. I appreciate all your comments and understand I should have been more vigilant and careful.

The metal arms will have longer "rental life" sorry.

Your parents? But there is a possibility they’ll take it out of your pocket money.

Settled snow is almost as dense as liquid water, so a 50cm fall on a balcony shade two metres wide is going to weigh in the order of three tonnes. Not surprising it collapsed.

I shoveled quite a bit of snow last night. One large shovel of snow is pretty heavy in it's own right.

We all make mistakes. As long as no one was hurt is the main thing.

You may want to sit down when you get the inevitable bill.

Inappropriately rude - and also inappropriate that a moderator (the normally impeccable Ace1) "liked" the post.

Hardly abusive really

Abusive is too far, but it's just an unnecessary bit of casual meanness.

My mother would have said "uncalled-for"

There's been a fair bit of casual meanness recently. All of it is unnecessary in my opinion.

Sure, I thought it was funny. Not in the least bit "rude", just a very mild micky-take. British humour, perhaps, which not everyone 'gets', but really nothing nasty or insulting about it.

Alas, far too few people can do basic math these days.

Tom

And far too many people like to assume that they know more than everyone else these days.

do you have some insurance such as Haftpflichtversicherung?

this should cover some or all of the cost.
