Hi there, After 2 years of paying someone else to do my taxes because I don't speak German, I'm going to try and do it myself his year using the BalTax.
If you are simply working and have no major assets, it is safe to do the tax declaration yourself. Just check at the end of the process how much tax you will have to pay, and then check again if the amount seems to be too high.
If you claim for something you are not entitled to, the tax office will write you a letter & simply remove the claim. But using the cantonal software it would be hard to make a false claim.
Putting in income etc is pretty easy but all the flat rate expenses are pretty hard to understand. If you have a return from previous years you should be able to work it out or go to the BS tax website and there they have the contact info of some places that can help you.

Good find. It's just a translation of some of the terms but should certainly help.
I would be filing tax returns for first time. I wanted to check how do I calculate my real tax liability (for Basel-Stadt) after adjusting all deductions, etc. to determine if I would have to pay more tax or would I get a refund?
Also if you can suggest good yet cheap consultant in Basel region, it would be great help.
- Install Baltax - is it online these days like the Zurich one?
- Fill in the numbers from the "Lohnausweis" (salary declaration) your employer has to provide
- Tick the boxes for the deductions you are entitled to
- Enter your bank account balances and interest
- The last page normally tells you your tax liability
On your Lohnausweis - assuming you are not on a C permit - you will find a figure "Quellensteuer" - tax at source already paid. If this is more than the figure calculated by Baltax you will get a hug and kiss from BS tax dept. If less, they will send some large men to your house to extract payment.
