Having missed the boat (despite signing application with agent immediately) on the perfect apartment (Baumgartnerhaus, garden, ground floor, gorgeous) near the eye hospital, I'm now getting a little desperate - have to be out of temporary accommodation end September. Saw fantastic apartment at the MParc end of Dornacherstrasse in Gundeldingen yesterday, but it seems really expensive (right for what it is though, I expect) and I don't know the area (moved from UK to Basel a month ago), and don't know anyone else who does. Anyone know it, recommend it (for a single woman, English, 40-ish, pretty independent - that's not an ad...)? Will be signing application today, in absence of anything else (I've seen about a dozen apartments so far - wouldn't have said I'm outrageously picky, but it's starting to look that way...)
I lived around there for 3 years and it was fine. It is a bit at the end of the line, so to speak, but Gundeli is a great area and they've really worked hard to make it more attractive.
As Carlos R mentioned already, it's towards the end but another vote for Gundeli area from my side. I have been living in Gundeli for some time now & it's a really nice area.
If you have any specific questions as regards to the area, feel free to ask here.
Gundeli is great, there is a different buzz with all manner of cafes and food joints. It is quite multi-cultural too. There are some beautiful apartments in nouveau or deco style (high pressed ceilings etc).
It is a walk away from the back entrance to the Basel SBB which is handy if you work outside of Basel.
Gundeli gets the thumbs up from me. It has character.
Many thanks all three. If you're familiar with Brighton, and Chorlton in Manchester you'll understand where I'm coming from. It may have been a bit vague, but what you've all said has reassured me - life, character, bit different, places to go out - and I need to feel safe, though tootled round Manchester on my own quite happily, so I don't know why I'm suddenly worried about that - just don't want the hassle any more I guess.
Hi there, just to let you know I have a buisness in the Gundeli area and come from Teeside (up North England) I have found the people very friendly and socially very nice, lots of nice restaurants .Also Margareten Park is lovely in the Summer to relax and take in the sun.Hope you settle ok
I live 2-3 blocks away from that location. In terms of the area, in my opinion it is fairly safe, close to public transportation with multiple choices and shops that are open on weekdays until 10:00 and Sunday too.
Just make sure the apartment is not too close to the church (unless you want free daily wake-up alarm at 7:00 am).
I just moved to Chorlton from Basel (the Thomas Kirche area). I really wish when we moved to Basel, we'd moved to Gundeli, the area has character and life compared to other parts of the city. Definitely at least as safe as Chorlton is.
Again, many thanks for the replies. I'm liking this English Forum! Half Evil person (already forgotten login, sorry), if you want any tips about Chorlton, let me know. Off on my jollies, fingers crossed for application acceptance whilst I'm away :-)
Hello, I`m just moving out from Gundeli so the Apartment is free from 1st September. I`ve been there for 7 months , it is a great place to live, but I need something at the other side of the river . I am paying it 1380fr. it has two rooms and a living room wich is conected to a kitchen. It`s in Sempacherstrasse 23,between the Banhof and Margaretten Park, so if you`r interested let me know,You can be the firs one to look at it ! Cheers
Gundeli is pretty cool, but I'm not a fan of that area near MParc, because it's not near the good aspects of Gundeli and the traffic is (for Basel) pretty loud. I looked at a flat near there once (possibly in the same blocks of relatively new apartments as the OP?) and found it a bit sterile. We kept looking and when I revisit that area, I'm glad we did.
Then again it's near tenpin bowling, a drum school, Volvo dealership and other good stuff.
Tantrum, I am now wondering if it's a bit sterile but did like the apartment when I viewed. Am currently living fourth floor attic studio, altbau so no lift. Rooms with doors, a lift, own WM/TD, and being able to cook a proper meal all seem very seductive right now. I've lived in houses "with character" in the past - bits drop off, so thought I'd try the modern thing for a change. Kids playground outside bedroom window not ideal, but it seems to be that/trams/the phantom hummer I have at present/traffic, so hey. The fun bits of Gundeli did seem to be a bit further towards the other end of the street, but there is a dance school nearby, so that's good. And if it's safe I'm ok walking/cycling - nothing's really that far away, is it?
David_ - thanks for the offer, appreciate it, but things are moving ahead now I think.
We are about to sign a contract for an apartment at Dornacherstrasse 29 (in theory we should send it tomorrow), and your last sentence made us worry: what is wrong with the numbers "around 30" and what is this "complex" you are mentioning?
29 is ok, you have underground or offroad parking by looks of it. The complex is the area of flats set back from the road to the left of the building. On a near monthly basis crap/junk is left at the entrance and it stays there for the next 5/6 days until someone clears it.
Have you been in the apartment when the bus pulls in / leaves and from the stop and during rush hour? It can be very loud! Make dure you visit at rush hour!
Its also worth knowing that number 45 is an asylum half way house and the police often attend when the permanent private security cant handle it.
