Basel feels very unsafe for a woman. Where can I move?

As a woman in her 30s from Spain (morena) who has travelled quite a lot, I have never felt as unsafe as I have during the past six months living in Basel. I’ve lived on both sides of the river and experienced issues throughout the city. I dress moderately, although I do acknowledge that I look quite good… yet it’s always the same group of people causing problems. Everyone knows who I’m referring to.

I’ve had countless unpleasant encounters with individuals who seem to have no intention of integrating or even caring about the society they live in.

I’m now considering moving elsewhere, and these are my most important criteria:

  1. Extremely low(well assimilated then required) or non-existent non-European immigration.
  2. Very safe — which seems closely linked to the first point.
  3. Preferably close to a lake and mountains.
  4. A maximum of 1.5 hours commuting distance to Basel.

Whether it’s a city or a small town doesn’t matter to me. Please help me find a place that fits these criteria.

Men, right? Ugh :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

not to a country with four (4) different cultures and their languages as well as 25% (twenty-five) foreigners, that’s for sure.
All the best.

The problem is that you probably want to live in a (big) city. Cities are magnet for all kinds of folks.

I’d say your best bet is to move out into the sticks somewhere in rural Solothurn.

Enlighten us, because no, we don’t.

You can move to some of the smaller towns around Basel e.g. Bottmingen

Unfortunately there are alot of primitives everywhere. A report in Tages Anzeiger (cant find the link) said that Switzerland is crawling with perverts. So no matter where you go these primitives will be everywhere. I advise you do a “self defence” course so that you can deal with these perverts.

The majority of Switzerland’s foreigners are European though, she clearly states that she wasn’t referring to them.

Americans seem to feature as one of the largest groups of non-European immigrants to Switzerland, many of whom have trouble adjusting to the European way of life. Them maybe?

I’d suggest Neuchâtel as I’ve always felt very safe here but there are a lot of Americans and Canadians here due to the presence of some large multinationals so clearly Neuchâtel wouldn’t qualify. It’s also go very high numbers of Italian and Portuguese nationals living here.
I think it’s probably at the limit of the 1h30 commute time too although I know a few people who commute to Basel.

Exactly who are you referring to?

It’s probably the Arab/African migrants who are often milling about and actually harassing younger women, but that’s just a hunch.

…and I’m guessing you ‘don’t want to elaborate’, right?

YEs. That can get a bit boring!

The Arab and African migrants who are harassing, stalking, following, and attacking women—especially around Kleinbasel—are a serious concern. I thought this was common knowledge; a quick Google search confirms it. Needless to say, not everyone is like this. And yes, no one is talking about the Swiss-born individuals of African descent who are more integrated than I am.

Maybe it’s common knowledge in Basel but most of us don’t actually live in Basel so we don’t really follow the news there.

is this a common theme in the larger cities in Switzerland? does it occur in the smaller cities?

It’s probably a common theme in large cities everywhere in Europe, it’s not something unique to Switzerland.
There are almost certainly areas where people are getting harassed by undesirable people and this is obviously going to be more common in larger cities but overall Switzerland is still a safe place to live.

If you listen to kingkong then everywhere is overrun with undesirable immigrants who are responsible for all the problems, fortunately most of is don’t take any notice of him.

100% this is a troll account.

Kleinbasel comes up regularly on the news about traffic and dealing. Just check the newspapers.

Hard to understand but Basel is a big city with big city problems. Similar small spots in Zurich, Geneva or Lausanne.

Where to if Kleibasel is not nice? Basically anywhere else in Switzerland. But, read the newspapers about the local “drug scene” first.
