Please advise. We will arrive from Zurich in October at 1700 hrs. Two people plus baggage. Booked into gasthof in Weil am Rhein. Is taxi best bet? Cost?
I am aware that 'usual' route might be crosstown to Badishcer Banhof, then a bus . However, as we will be at the end of a very long travel day, we would be willing to spend a bit to get to our lodgings quickly.
Taxis are expensive. Checking with the Swiss Railway Site , it looks as if at that time in the evening, there may well be a direct train to Weil am Rhein from Basel SBB at 17.37 and again at 18.37.
You don't spend a "bit" on a taxi. You spend a "lot". The rule of thumb I used in Switzerland for anything that might be expensive is you think of a figure in the sense of "but I guess it won't be as much as ....". Take that figure you thought of, double it, and you'll be very close.
I recently took a taxi from SBB to the airport with a detour along the way to collect some stuff. I used one of the cheaper taxis (Union rather than one of the pretty Mercedes) and it cost 65 CHF.
The near side of WaR, direct, is probably a touch further, so I'd guess a taxi is going to be in the 75-100 CHF range. Possibly more if you are further into the town.
By the way: do you arrive @ Zurich airport or Basel Airport? Should be Zurich if you arrive from the US... So if you take the train to Basel, you might as well change platforms and take the train to WaR?
Agree with everything that's been said so far. Get the train to Weil, then taxi from there. Not only are taxis in Switzerland expensive, you'll pay through the nose if you want to cross into another country in one (Euroairport doesn't count!). But the taxi driver might not mention this until it's too late...
Just so. We arrive in Zurich at airport. Train to Basel. Seems simplest to get the train to Weil at SBB rather than going crosstown to Badischer Bahnhof. Taxi from there (Weil - SBB) to Gasthof. Thank you.
