Basel Stadt Public Schools

Hello everyone,

I’m looking for personal experiences with Basel-Stadt public primary schools in Grossbasel.

For context: I’m Swiss and went through the public system from enfantine to gymnase, so I know the basics—there’s no official ranking and children are assigned roughly by catchment area. Still, I’ve found that the day-to-day experience can vary, and locals often have helpful “word on the street” context about different schools.

We’re moving to Basel, from San Francisco, with our lively, creative 6-year-old. His German is still basic, so any insights—especially around welcoming environments and support for kids learning German—would be incredibly helpful. We are only considering public schools as we envision this move to be permanent for our family.

If you’re open to sharing, I’d love to hear which school you have experience with in Grossbasel and what your experience has been (pros/cons welcome).

Many, many thanks!

(disclaimer, this is what we were told by an educational consultant)

Can’t comment on the basel-stadt case, but there is something similar to an official ranking I’m told… there are assessments done of schools, and “scores” for each school.

The catch? Common plebs cannot access those, only teachers or those IN schools. The consultant we used also was a teacher, and accessed these lists, and was able to give us a few pointers on schools… our kid was too small still, so we didn’t pay them for the full support (just more of an intro chat), and this was 2 years ago or so, but I can probably dig up their details…

Thank you @Spinal. Would love those details.

Does anyone else have knowledge or experience with the following primary schools?

  • Isaak Iselin
  • Gotthelf
  • Neubad
  • Sevogel
  • Peterschule
  • Munsterplatz

Thank you so much!
