Basic Question on insurance and pregnancy

Hi,

I am an non-EU national, currently applying for PhD program in Switzerland. My wife is pregnant of 3 months, and if I get accepted into this program, I would start when she is like 6 months. So, my question is: will health insurance companies cover her pregnancy related expenses? including birth? We currently live in Germany, and because we recently started with a new private insurance, we have no coverage for pregnancy related things. and if we stay here we would not get any coverage, as there is a waiting period of 8 months. The only way we would get coverage is with Public insurance, but that is only available if you have a job, and we dont.

so, whats the situation in Switzerland? I am unsure what type of health insurance I would get, but would any company cover pregnancy expenses for someone already pregnant? or is it like in Germany...?

Thanks

Fred

Welcome to the Forum.

Yes, acceptance for the good basic health insurance is compulsory here. You must have Swiss health insurance, it will be back dated to when you arrived here. You can choose which company you want from www.comparis.ch The cheaper companies offer the same compulsory cover, but tend to be very slow when re-imbursing the medical bills.

You should get insurance for the baby as well. It starts when your baby is born and is very cheap. This will ensure you are fully covered at the birth for everything .
