BBC iPlayer works!

I would recommend UnoTelly's UnoDNS service, which works almost seamlessly for things like BBC iPlayer, as it doesn't slow down your internet connection going through the VPNs servers or route all your traffic to the VPN.

It only works when it finds a service that is region-specific. Therefore, sometimes it doesn't work, in which case I use a VPN, but most of the time it does. Obviously you can put the DNS settings on your router for the whole network if you're on your home network most/all of the time.

Well, while this solution isn't ideal you will see in the earlier reply I recommended UnoDNS and it does work if you're on WiFi - BUT unless you have iSwifter or another flash browser it doesn't work as iOS doesn't support Flash in Safari etc. (and Android doesn't either if you're on JB+). If you do happen to have an Android on Jelly Bean, there is a better workaround though.

Another thing possible could be that there is an app called "BBC iPlayer (Global)" which you can download from the App Store and you need to have a paid subscription (CHF9/month or CHF85/year), and it gives you many shows and many seasons - not all, but most.

Sorry If I was a bit unclear - I tend to make things complicated

I haven't tried it in Android, but this worked on google chrome browser both in Windows and Linux:

http://hola.org/

It is very simple, as it is just a browser plugin.

Presumably it will also work easily on MacOS and Android.

It doesn't seem to have an iOS version, though.

Is there any danger of malware from plugins like machint and hola?

I'm sorry, I'm not so good technically to tell you that.

Hola works by sharing connections between the users (I presume if you are outside the UK it will somehow route your connection through one or more UK users to let you access the iPlayer), so that is indeed some reason for concern, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to know if there is really a risk.

The plugin can be disabled centrally on chrome very easily though, so unless you are really paranoid and don't trust the browser to really turn it off, you could just enable the extension, watch some iPlayer without doing anything sensitive in the net while you are at it, and then disable it.

Perhaps someone more technically minded can investigate.

I googled "is hola.org safe" and it seems not to have any known issues so far.

expat shield really %4^&*( up my laptop - ads, trojans, speed .... back to reliable vpn uktvaccess.com ... not free but it works

Never had problems with Expat Shield (for iPlayer only; TV channels I get from cable) ..... I just use an adblocker - easy. (Never seen any evidence of trojans or other malware).

Me either.

Have downloaded this but am faced with a 'payment wall' when trying to access i player......???

RS

So what do you need to do? Install the iplayer first and then expatshield or the other way around?

Seen a post on another forum that says ExpatShield you have to pay for as of Sept 2013, but the website still says 100% free. Anyone know which statement is true?

On it's own site, it's still claiming that it's free, and despite already having it installed, I just did a fresh download without problems (but not install).

I've started my installed version without a problem (I haven't used it on my laptop for a while, as I've been using my iPad for iPlayer).

http://www.expatshield.com/

There is also something called Hotspot Shield Elite (also by Anchorfree), which I believe is paid.

Maybe that's confusing the issue.

There's also a plugin for Firefox, anonymox which seems to work ok for iplayer.Chrome also has something similar.

I tried xpatshield once and it really screwed up my PC about 1 year after installation. Was difficult to remove.

I have a VPN from My Private Network (UK Based and 5 quid pm)) which lets me watch on my PC or ipad - however, I have not found a way to allow iplayer to work on my TV which can connect to the internet - anybody know how to make this work?

OverPlay SmartDNS.

Expatshield no longer works with BBC iPlayer. Expatshield have put it behind a paywall and require payment by subscription to view...

Not an altogether unsurprising move - content streaming puts the most strain on any network. It probably got to the point where they either had to block iPlayer completely or reduce it's use through a paywall.

Yep, gone and uninstalled.

Tried another stand alone free VPN on laptop, as recommended by Gizmo's Freeware - CyberGhost - free version had limited UK IP addresses available (as in, directing user to paid sub.) and iPlayer streaming was really iffy.

I've ended up using the same free one as I have on iPad and Android phone - getukvpn.com.

No stand alone programme/app., just a case of entering a couple of lines in creating a new network, in Network and Sharing (instructions are provided on their site). It then just appears as an option on connections, when the wifi bar indicator on task bar is clicked.

The only negative (if you can call it that), thus far, is that the current numerical password has to be got prior to connection, (from their website, as this changes more or less on a daily basis), and entered when the pop up box appears as part of the connection process.

No problem in functionality, although casting to TV (via Chromecast), gives a very slight jerkiness - as if every other frame has been snipped.

As this doesn't happen on the lappy screen, I would guess it's just a casting issue (full screen casting is shown as experimental).

BBC Iplayer will now keep content for 30 days instead of the seven days which currently applies. In the three weeks after it expired 154K peolpe looked for Happy valley.

I have successfully used the Firefox add-on Anonymox to receive both ITVplayer and BBC iPlayer.

ITV require you to register with a UK postcode and ask for a UK pastcode each time it is used.

The download speed is serioulsy slow and the data is apparently capped to a daily limit, that said I watched a whole episode of Cilla without it stopping. (ITV makes you watch the ads with no fast forward.)
