Russia shot down another passenger aircraft with a missile yesterday.
Some airlines still fly over Russian airspace, Emirates being a major example, (of course it depends on the route you are flying). Please take care when booking your flights.

A YouTube video on the incident https://youtu.be/xQEghJ8UVWk?si=6QUo_Cfsu4cFsQeb
Air China, El Al, …
Both listed in the link in initial post….
Er, that flight was destined to Grozny which just happens to be in Russia. Not certain how one would avoid Russian airspace flying to Russia.
The flight, en route from Baku to Grozny, was diverted due to heavy fog. Conflicting reports suggest potential causes, including a bird strike or damage from a Russian missile during drone activity near Grozny. The plane faced GPS jamming and was denied landing at Russian airports before attempting an emergency landing in Kazakhstan.
There are +/- 100,000 flights each and every day. Don’t let one incident put you off flying. It is by far the safest way to travel.
Yes it was on route to Russia. But Malaysian airlines was not.
If you watch the YouTube video the aviation weather shows there was no fog and weather was above minima.
Images show severe shrapnel damage not at all inline with a bird strike.
Read the thread on Pprune or any YouTube video from an aviation experts. All experts are saying images are conclusive to missile shrapnel.
Not put off flying, just Russian airspace. As many airlines avoid I think it is sensible.
The message is about flying over/near Russian airspace. If they shot down a plane flying to a city in Russia in a known route, what could others expect?
Well Iran shot down a plane departing from Tehran. You better avoid their airspace too. Oh, and the US shot down an Iranian domestic flight.
Airlines don’t choose where to fly, they follow the instructions of their governments.
Extremely happy to stay out of Iranian airspace…and soil. Also, not hard to stay out of Russian airspace.
The issue here is ticket prices. Flights between Europe and Asia over Russian airspace are shorter, thus cheaper. But, there’s a chance that during the Ukraine war the number of civilian jets shot down has increased to two.
Well I’d avoid any war zone. At least the Iranians came out pretty quickly and said “we messed up”, Russia still deny MH.
My point is, many people will assume that most major airlines are not over flying Russia/Ukraine and it is not the case. Just a heads up for people who would rather not take the risk to check their carrier and routing.
