Bereavement flights to the USA?

There was recently an unexpected death in the family and myself and my wife would like to return for the funeral towards the end of this week.

We would like to leave Tues/Wed but are not sure the best way to fly from Zurich to Pittsburgh USA or if anyone may have tips in which airlines out of Zurich are best on short notice.

We are also potentially willing to fly into New York City or Washington DC and drive afterwards as well...thanks for any help or pointing in a better direction to find information...

Sorry for your loss

I usually find www.skyscanner.net the best for comparing flights at short notice

Sorry to hear that.

I have only heard of US airlines offering that so best to give them a call

Never heard of such a thing and according to Wiki most airlines don’t offer them now anyway.

Only ever US/Canada airlines that did/do.

A quick check on ebookers.ch Zurich/Pittsburgh (1 stop) shows fares around CHF1,200 per person return flights only.

Call the airlines directly. I used Air Canada to Toronto, the fare was less than e-bookers, but not by much.

USA Toady with the big three numbers: http://traveltips.usatoday.com/sympa...re-107085.html

Godspeed.

Why would you write that only US airlines do/did it and that it's not done anymore?? Wiki is not the font of all knowledge.

Calling the airline is the best way to see if they can offer you something. Check online to see what the fares are, then call to see if you can get a better fare.

I just checked skyscanner leaving Tuesday and coming back a week later. British had flights around chf 800 You have to fly to london, then philadelphia, then pittsburgh. Doable in one day, but exhausting. For about 1200, Delta or American to JFK , JFK to Pit. If you’re thinking of fly/drive best to go to Washington/Dulles. I think United, maybe Swiss/lufthanssa is your best choice to DC.

It‘s at least an 8 hour drive from NY to PIT, and DC to Pit is under 5.

Often flights into Philadelphia are least expensive, but you still need a connecting flight to PIT or a 6 hour drive at least.

If you can get a good fare to Toronto, that‘s about. 5 hour drive to PIT, so maybe Air Canada, Swiss, British. Not sure if car rental and driving to the US is a hassle.

I am sorry for your loss.

It‘s worth a call to see if you can wrangle a reduced fare. If it were me, I‘d try Delta, British, Swiss, maybe American, AirCanada. Skyscanner gives you links to all the fares for a number of sites, you just have to go to each site and look for the fare.

Good luck!

Do any European ones? I couldn’t find anything that said so.

Most airlines that did offer them seem to have dropped them in recent years.

Best thing to do is pick a few airlines that fly Zurich/Pittsburgh and ask them directly.

WOW do very cheap flights to Pittsburgh from Paris or the UK (Edinburgh or Gatwick) via Iceland.

In March of this year my dad passed away in Miami where he lived. When I went it was to be by his side as he was still in hospital, so no bereavement ticket was asked by me when I reserved.

He passed away whilst I was there. I missed my return flight home on SWISS by a day because of a meeting to sort out some of his things. Anyways, I called to rebook on the same flight the following day, when I explained my reason the girl told me if I sent a copy of his death certificate they would refund me the transfer fee. I did, and they did.

Yes. They probably don't advertise it or call it that.

I was offered the regular fare (about 200E when booked in advance, vs around 800 last minute) the night before I flew out.

It doesn't hurt to call and ask.

Oh, that‘s right. Totally forgot.....relatively new service.

I did one trip here via Iceland. It was a very long trip. If I was on my way to a funeral I'd spend the extra money.

Thanks so much everyone on these suggestions and the quick responses, we appreciate it and it has really helped us explore our options...I will update with what we decide in the end but it's looking like speaking with Delta and going through JFK to PIT Wed may be the most reasonable option for us.

I hope you make it. I'm sorry for your loss.

Don't know if this will suit, but many major airlines offer such fares, and they're often based upon how closely related the family member is.

Thanks everyone, we weren't able to fly with Delta because the layover timing didn't work out when considering we have to take our small dog with us as well.

There was surprisingly a few reasonable prices on this short notice for 1100-1400CHF for one or two stop flights, and we went with Air Canada to fly through Toronto and then to PIT beginning Wed morning.

Bereavement for Air Canada is only for flights into or out of Canada and are special deals that might not necessarily be cheaper. We didn't have the chance to learn what Delta's deal may have been. Most companies seem to have stopped since it's not so difficult to get a reasonable fare on short notice, but if we need help or changes at some point we can definitely mention in on our travels at desks etc.

Sorry you’re having to deal with this, but good to hear you’ve sorted flights out. Just make sure your dog has all the necessary vaccinations/paperwork needed to go from/to Switzerland and US. Don’t want that throwing a last minute spanner in the works!

Thanks for the reminder, we just traveled with the dog to the States in August so most of the paper work is current and we handled the couple things we needed to update and okay with the airlines. Luckily this is the second time we've flown with him so we are aware of all the details and process of getting him in the cabin with us.
