what shop in zürich (or online shop) has the best curry powder?
before anyone says that all shop-bought curry powders are the same, nope, i have some from the US (from mountain rose herbs) which consistently makes magic curries. unfortunately they terminated international delivery
tried migros and coop curry powders - ok but nothing special. globus has a big range but i would rather get a recommendation in that case because of the prices
thanks for any tips about shops or brands, esp spicy curry powder with a kick
Maybe I need to try it. Do you mean with a spice grinder like the attached image? Do you have any particular recipe that you like? No doubt I can google plenty of recipes, but just to ask some advice...
You can Google for many curry recipes. Look for a good shop selling Asian spices, which is busy, as you need the shop to buy their spices often, and not sell you spices that have been on the shop shelf for 6 months.
I keep about 10 whole spices in small jars, and I grind the amounts I need each time in a pestle and mortar. But a coffee grinder is also fine. You can use ready ground spices, but as already mentioned, they have a short shelf life, and when stale they become boring.
Thanks. I usually go for sprint cooking on work evenings, 15 mins to serving, hence I like curry powder. But I am highly tempted now to try a spice grinder and see how it goes, it seems like it could be reasonably fast prep with the Kuhn Rikon grinder or a coffee grinder.
Prof Taratonga - unfortunately Mountain Rose Herbs have secret ingredients, see the end of the list -
Contains: organic Coriander, organic Turmeric, organic Fenugreek, organic Ginger, organic Mustard Seed, organic Black Pepper, organic Cayenne, and organic spices.
I can take it as a starting point. Although some things I assume that I will anyway be buying as a ground spice, not a whole spice e.g. turmeric, so it's the same problem of finding a good source for ground spices as for curry powder. Will check out Aggarwal.
Barkat (which seems to have gotten a homepage, after all: http://www.barkat.ch (just no real content ATM) also has a variety of ready-to-go curry-mixtures on sale.
And, of course, all the ingredients.
Close to it, on Birmensdorferstrasse en route to Bahnhof Wiedikon there's a (Chinese I assume) store that has even more stuff.
They have a lot more fresh stuff, too (like fresh coriander with roots).
If You have all Indian Spices than you dont need Curry powder. But still if you Want , you can find them easily on any Indian Store like ' Art of food' thats in Oerlikon.
I moved from ready made curry powder to 'grind your own' about 6 months ago.. world of difference...
I also invested in an electric mill. (Some purist poo poo them, they say it heats the powder.. but mine doesn't and I think they're worrying about older machines.) It now takes 30 seconds to chuck in the spices and get enough for a few weeks. Plus it's always going to be a little bit different depending on what you put in....
Just noticed this thread. In case you are looking for instant curry mixes or individual spices then please visit my newly launched website http://curryinahurry.tictail.com/ , selling organic and freshly grounded spices and worldwide spice blends with delivery anywhere in Switzerland.
I only just got it and not actually tried it yet but it has a solid quality feel. I am next going to gear up with spices.
Thanks again Sbrinz for your suggestion to try cooking with the raw spices instead of curry powder. I had always thought of curries as being beyond my cook ability, but now I am looking forward to trying some recipes from the basic spices.
I tried it in a couple of meals and it has a good taste, not powerful but good flavor appeal. I'm not sure what Palmöl is doing in a spice mill, maybe it's a preservative.
I have also started with my own spice mill and I am using cloves a lot. I even tried ground cloves in an omelet. It's not a subtle spice but it really gets a bit addictive. I actually think that cloves would go great in chocolate. Google shows up a few hits for that combination - someone tell Sprüngli...
"Wiberg" is one of the best companies for spices. For a price of course. They have more than one curry mixes. In general all their spices are top quality, miles above McCormick and all those Coop/Migros labeled spices.
This red curry mix for example tastes amazing but it all has to do with one's own likings.
25% salt! geez that is really stupid. Every kitchen has salt and pepper, you can always add more salt, in small amounts, but you cannot take it away! With good spices you only need a small amount of salt, if any.
Last week RTS consumer show A bon entendeur had an interesting piece on curry. They show a couple Swiss spice makers, and also run a comparison test of curry powders available at major retailers.
Turns out the cheapest (Aldi) was the best. As a result, it's out of stock now at most Aldi stores in Suisse romande. Ingredients are: Turmeric, coriander, mustard flour, chillies, cumin, celery seed, fenugreek seed, fennel, bay leaf, table salt, dextrose.
