Prof. Hosli and Prof. Lapaire are both top-notch. We know many other happy couples that have also worked with the Universtitatspital and shared our good experiences.
The other advantage of using the team at the hospital is that you'll be among familiar faces (and surroundings) when the baby eventually comes. They also have a regular orientation night to explain how everything works.
If you have fully-private insurance (and had it for at least a year before your wife became pregnant), it is possible to be followed by just one of the doctors. If you are semi-private or public, you are seen by whoever is available.
Nope, those with semi-private insurance are also eligible to have their own choice of doctors. And yes, it should be had before the pregnancy (1 year, or in some cases I heard 9 months before hand).
My wife also goes to her for over 2 years now. She and her staff speak good English. I have been with my wife to her clinic a few times and I find her friendly. We started to consult her with the start of my wife's pregnancy.
As pointed out before, she will not be present for the delivery in hospital. But the team at Unispital Basel is great and the midwifes as well as the doctors there can speak good English too.
My girlfriend swears by Dr Anna Wagner, located near spalentor, www.basel-gynaekologie.ch , english speaking, boutique practice, so really takes the time to address concerns etc.
I can vouch for Fr Artztin Ludwig Diouff, have been seeing her since 2016 for post menopause gynae issues and she is marvellous, very thorough and better than any female gynae I was referred to back in the UK. I needed a minor op that was a day procedure and she referred me to a Dr Siebert at St Clara Spital, he was also excellent and explained all of the options available to me very fully. I believe he used to be at Universpital in Basel.
