Best fondue cheese in Engleberg

I'm currently in Engelberg and tomorrow we're making fondue. Any recommendations for a good cheese shop in Engleberg?

I would go to the shop in Kloster Engelberg. We bought raclette cheese there once.

Mornin' all

Unfortunatly the cheese shop in the Kloster is closed, has been for a while. But great shop in Engelbergs 'high street'.

Enjuy

and have a Great day y'all

Really? Looks still active: https://chaes-im-kloster.ch/

It seems it was closed for renovation, but according to this article, reopened in December:

Engelberg is not exactly a metropolis, so it won’t be a long walk to the high street should the curds be away.

That’s the web page I looked at to see if it was now open. I was there in summer, and wanted to get some local cheeses, that’s when I saw it was closed.

Still, I hope it’s now open.

'av a nice evening y’all

It is open. They were selling Blue Stilton. We didn't buy any, have purchased 3kg from Lidl, Binningen in December last year. (It freezes well).

We did buy their homemade fondue and some heuschnapps.

Harder, was sourcing some bread!

Second that.. Lidl is very good indeed for cheese. Got some Parmesan just before Christmas in Baar Lindenpark at 20chf per kilo and picked up a couple of pound blocks ( 454g ) of Stilton at 6.95chf each.

They are opening up a store in Metalli in Zug in the spring which will hopefully put a bit of pressure on Coop and Migros.

Parmesan is not an Italian cheese!

Parmesan is an American invention to copy badly the Parmigiano Reggiano.

I hope you bought Parmigiano Reggiano aged min 2 years 🤞🏻😉

In the EU, and perhaps in Switzerland too, the word Parmesan is only allowed, by law, to be used to describe Parmigiano Reggiano.

It even has DOP status like Parmigiano Reggiano.

But in the US, anything goes. I had some "Parmesan" in the US once - it had the taste and texture which was definitely not Parmigiano Reggiano!

Hergestellt von Cosorzio Latteria, Virgilio, Viale della Favorita, 19, IT-46100 Mantova.

It couldn’t be more Italian than if it was fashionably dressed, rides a Vespa at crazy speeds and is connected to the Mafia.

The home made fondue from the Cheese Shop at the Kloster was very good.

In the UK it's labelled Parmigiano Reggiano rather than Parmesan but most people still call it Parmesan as calling it Parmigiano Reggiano sounds more than a bit pretentious.

What has to do with mafia? .... 😵💫😵💫😵💫

But in Engelber (OW) shouldn't Sbrinz and not Parmesan be the choice ?

WRONG!

Parmesan is simply the English and Frech name for "Parmigiano Reggiano".

"Both Parmigiano Reggiano and Parmesan are protected designations of origin (PDO) for cheeses produced in these provinces under Italian and European law."

Under EU law not international law

I wrote that earlier in the thread. (I'm on his ignore list thankfully so he doesn't see my posts).

Why someone can live in Europe for years gets the EU confused with the whole of Europe is beyond me. There are twenty-three European countries not in the EU.
