Best headphones for iPhone?

Yeah sorry thinking about this, really should be it's own thread topic I think!!

there are several ways depending on where your at. and I guess what position your itunes is in at the moment.

I wiill need time to compile a full response to that question.

But there are 2 major things I want to say now before you start doing anything.

1) This requires the source material (original CD, itunes purchases)

2) you cannot upversion the song once it's been downgraded. even if you change the format to 256 this just makes the file size larger without increasing the quality.

with the exception of itunes match for US itunes acc. holders, since I am a UK holder I don't even know if that service is supported for US expats once you leave the country? due to licensing issues.

still I will get to work on a response for you. I meantime it's worth seeing if you have highly compressed files in your collection.

1) start itunes

2) new smart playlist

3) bit rate / less than/ type 196

4) make sure you have unticked "limit to" so that it brings up everything.

5) click on albums icon to see how many albums you have and more importantly which ones are the most popular to you. try and remmeber if you have the cd or purchases via itunes.

don't start reimporting tracks at this point if you do have the cd as it creates duplicates and will start to mess up you playcount. I will post another article once I type it out and find links.

If your a US itunes account holder don't know if I would do anything at this time more on this later.

just got Jabra Bluetooth and it is working really good:-)...I got it from Digitec.ch for 47 CHF..

OK I want to split this post into 2 sections depending on what you have.

1) Have no original source disc. or have purchased music via itunes or have an American itunes acc.

OK well first and easiest is the American itunes acc. holders as some of you know apple just launched itunes match.

As I said I have no idea if it works outside the US as I don't even have an option to do so.

As I am a european acc. holder it will probably take apple forever to sort out the licensing. and I have upgraded most of my library already above 256K.

Obviously this service is going to eat into your data packet bundles (probably what apple was counting on with the phone companies) so wi-fi would be better. Maybe some american forum member could comment if this works wordwide or only in US. in which case maybe a holiday to the US is due.

this one for computers

this one for ios devices once your music library is synced with match

If you don't have have a US acc. it maybe worth considering holding off to see if apple can make some announcement over the next 6 months on match for Europe.

If that is to long and you have electronic purchases from itunes store then I guess your next stop is Itunes plus. which I hope most of you have done already.

Although if match rolls out before Christmas then that will be a sore point as you would have got it for the $24.99/year price along with upgrading your cd tracks to 256k).

what is itunes plus? here the faq

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1711

It can be found in itunes/store/home/ check the quick link box in the right hand pane/ the bottom choice is itunes plus. If it has a number next to it you can buy the 256 drm free file for a "special offer price".

here is a older video but the link is still the same as the new version,

http://www.ehow.com/video_2259590_us...nes-store.html

newer files have come down from itunes store in 256 drm free. It's just older tracks < end 2008.

Please backup your itunes before you start and immediately after you have replaced the files. (it maintains the play count in itunes by overwriting the existing file, and if the file gets lost/corrupted say over 6 months you have to rebuy I believe).

PS I still prefer optical backup for my music and photo's as I don't trust HDD storage devices, of course ssd memory/drives prices have collapsed in recent years now making this viable

and that is about your options for legitimate upgrades without the original cd's. obviously there are ways to get files but that not legit and I don't want an infraction. plus it's stealing!! BE GOOD.

My next post will detail how to upgrade your itunes with the original cd's without losing playcounts, for those who want at least 256K and greater. It's laborious and i hope your patient, and with optical drives comming to a end this maybe your last chance to upgrade from cd's using computer drives. Plus the dark winter months are looming so what better time to do this task.

Can't find the edit post function in this forum? want to clarify a couple of things from the previous post.

2nd part of my post.

2) If you have the original cd and want bit rate >= 256k.

ok this is the faffy one.

I didn't do all my collection at apple lossless (highest quality) I did some! mostly soundtrack, classical, jazz, accoustic. For albums I really like I tend to import at 320k, for ones I don't 256k. since storage on the phones ipod is increasing I guess now you can import at 320k with out fear.

as a guide to track size from the link below.

At 128kbps a 3 minute song will use approx 3MB.

At 320 kbps a 3 minute song will use approx 7MB.

At Apple Lossless a 3 minute song is approx 15MB

But I have found lossless to be higher than this on variable bit rate

4 mins is about 36mb. some of my classical files are huge >120mb per track.

Anyway the link below highlights how to change the settings but I have a few additional notes on how to preserve your playcount. NOTE I didn't use lame, these instruction are for just itunes and you doing the work not 3rd party plug-ins or software. read this before continuing it works for pc and mac as I have done this on both systems.

http://macintoshhowto.com/itunes/imp...to-itunes.html

What are the best settings to import songs into itunes?

ok ready? BACK-UP first.

OK so the file structure is kinda the same between mac and pc.

usualy people set there music library as (my) music/ itunes/artist/album/[your songs].aac

note that in the itunes folder your your xml file for itunes. the way it works is that it stores bookmarks for tracks in the sub directories.

So as a test grab a cd of your fav album (Just one as a test!) DON"T load it just yet if you do that it creates a duplicate copy of the track at a higher rate.

right click the track in itunes and click show in finder (OSX)/explorer (MS)

open a new window and create a backup folder on desktop. CUT the files to that folder for that album. (i.e your not deleting your 128k files as this is a test run).

see the guide link above to select the bit rate you want. insert the cd and import.

NOW it's been a while since I done this so please feel free to correct me here but when you use search in itunes for album you will see two 2 entries for each track.

right click on the field bar and select "bit rate" and do the same again and do "date added".

sort by "date added" this makes it easier to select the entries you have just added. highlight them and delete them.

IMPORTANT BIT itunes at this point will ask you two questions (unless you have previously checked the first click box)

1st one is - "Are you sure you want to remove this track from your library". yes is the answer

2nd question is:- " Do you want to move the selected song to trash or keep it in the media folder": you are presented 3 options cancel/keep file/ move to trash.

at this point select "keep file".

recap of what you have done at this point.

1) moved the original 128k outside the itunes folder sturcture.

2) imported the album again using higher bit rate.

3) deleted the itunes entry for the higher bit rate files. BUT retained the files (see music/itunes/artist/album/)

So all that need to be done is to re-reference the 128K entry in itunes to the new higher bit rate track location for itunes.

So go to your itunes original 128K tag with the play count (note the bit rate at this point) and play/double click. You will get error message saying someting like I can't find your file! click locate now select the the track name in your finder or explorer. the song should play with the play count intacted and note the bit rate as been changed to the higher one also date added has been changed.

once done, sync your pod, and read point 2 below.

2 points of caution where I made mistakes.

1st) in the hurry you can select the wrong file for the track just move the file outside itunes folder and click to play again it will ask you again to select the track. then just move the higher rate one back in.

2nd) apple changed itunes a few versions back so that if a file was corrupted it would import the file back into itunes from your pod, phone. if it ask something about importing files upon syncing click ignore or it will pull all your old files back in. typically upon syncing it ask a question I can't remember off the top of my head what it is and it replaces the ipod iphone version with the newer one.

that's it you have just done one album! if all is well you can delete the older 128K files and do another.

I run an older version of itunes when doing this apple may have changes how smart itunes is and made things easier and I probably haven't got it 100% right. but I hope you get the general just of what just took place.

just to clarify you have to click each old 128k song tag in the album to remap it to the new high bitrate file. unless itunes has become smarter and knows for all the reat of the album which I doubt. told you it was faffy!

Thanks a lot for your in depth explanations.. I will try to implement this!!

Damn cat just chewed up my headphones! Gotta check out some of these Sennheiser you guys are talking about. Learn so much here on the EF - who knew?

Cheers

Sue

In the <30 chf price range the Creative EP 630 are an excellent choice:

http://www.amazon.com/Creative-EP-63.../dp/B002EL4MXY

I have been using these now for several years, and the bass is very good

BTW, there's now an option on my iPhone, maybe ipods do it too now, to automatically import songs to the ipod in a lower bit rate AAC format. This means you can keep all your high quality versions on your PC, and still cram a lot on your ipod. There is some degredation, but it's not as bad as I was expecting. It's set on the sync screen of iTunes.

Better than my old system of keeping 2 copies of everything, one uncompressed, one compressed for the ipod.

Thanks for finding that, I didn't know there was an Apple-specific version.

Yeah I knew, but thanks for highlighting that to the forum. For me though I do prefer less tracks on my pod at a higher quality.

It may be tricky to tell the diffrence from 128k from 256k from the pod if you are using earbuds or in-ear. still think you can tell between 128k and lossless and 320k

but when your at home using full cans or even senn px200 which someone said (which is another great set also, most akg and bayerdynamic are good too.) you can certainly hear it, I think, but it's all subjective.

If you are going to import tracks you have the double copy of bit tracks for a short while (128 and 320k) just plug your headphones into and see if you can tell.

let us know.

for me I can tell easily between full and buds on just about all soundtrack classical tracks. it all comes down to the vividness of the sound to me. probably not on metal/rock because of the muddyness of the sound it's much harder with buds. So it's varies between genre I find!

here are some of my favourite tracks for testing are:-

1) massive attack:- unfinished sympathy

2) Theme tune form shaft by issac hayes.

for more delicate and vibrant check out

3) Ice dance (edward sissorhands) from crouch end chorus and city of prague philharmonic. INFACT just about anything from city of prague philharmonic .

love this track too, shame it's not in itunes!

4) Noon by eric serra from the film leon aka leon the professional

the last one for bass test

5) aggressive expansion by hans zimmer and james newton edwards form the dark knight, I can really tell the difference on this track between headsets, ones that don't handle bass well literally fall apart when the mid-tones come in.

but I am getting off topic.

I prefer the soundtracks for test, due to more complex harmonies and alot more going on. you can tell if things are missing when big bass sequences hit home or distortion in the high end on headsets I find!

still if you disagree post your track suggestions and comment whether you can hear a difference between bit rate and headsets!

I bought the Klipsch Image ONE from the Bahnhofstrasse Apple store about 6 months ago and they are fantastic (and I've had literally dozens of different headphones/ earphones). They cost Fr180.-

Link: http://www.klipsch.com/image-one-stereo-headphones

I suppose all this tech talk detracts from the original topic somewhat. so I though for all those you just wanted a answer to the original question I throw a suggestion and hope others will pipe in.

Pick a few tracks like above from collection.

e.g bass heavy, accoustic, pop etc.

and find a store that has headphones on demo.

e.g the apple store especially if you are considering compact on-ear or over ear. don't think apple do in-ear.

here I know you can have a reference sound from dr dre beats, knowing that these are your reference set try out others in the store with your ipod and tracks if they will let you!

After that ask friends what they use could you try them? (may wanna clean in-ear pieces and find out if they have the other sizes still)

Anybody know of anywhere else that has headphones on test?

note the models and brands that you like which sets/manufactures are to your liking. and meet your requirement e.g foldable/collapsable, in-ear/on-ear/over ear, compact, fashion, robustness of ipod connector and headphone wire connectors, in-line mics. although having said that I would ignore most of these if the price and the sound quality meet my expectation.

If that is all to much work try the ever dependable whathi-fi

http://www.whathifi.com/reviews/accessories/headphones

seems for in ear they have given the 2011 award to http://www.whathifi.com/review/beyerdynamic-dtx-101-ie

in the £40-80 and this would be considered the budget section for this magazine. I have seen reviews for headphones well into £800 in this magazine .

Oh and don't buy open headphones for commuting. they are to noisy for fellow travellers. before anyone comments on grado's on-ear who typically only make only open!

UPDATE to post 23 on this thread about itunes match.

macrumors have just posted this saying by error or as a roll out but apple on some stores in europe is starting to roll match out.

"Apple seems to be deploying iTunes Match into international music stores this evening, though there seem to be some ongoing glitches that suggests they could be an early mistake or a partial roll out.

Several readers in the UK and Australia have noticed that iTunes Match is now a sign up option in their iTunes Account information page. Apple has not yet started promoting iTunes Match in the iTunes Store, but the links to iTunes Match are live with localized pricing (see above). " from the article
