Best place to live in Switzerland

As we all know, there are a lot of rankings about quality of life, often discussed on this forum, and Swiss cities generally do very well on these rankings. So, I thought we could make our own very informal ranking of the best places to live in Switzerland. It's of course much more interesting to read if we post the reason for our vote rather than just voting

Nice to see people voting, but comments appear to be quite absent

Have a look around the forum, I'm pretty sure it's been done to death already.

The problem is the question. What is the best car? A Ferrari? Not if you plan to go to IKEA... so it can only be the best place for a certain purpose. What are you looking for?

P.S: Zurich.

I know, I know, the question is not ideal and I don't think it could be. I would immagine that the answers from a 20-year old student, a 35-year old parent with small kids and a 65 year old pensioneer would be rather different. So the question should of course be "Given your current situation in life, what would be the best place to live"?

well, voted Geneva because...it's my home town.... I know it and I know the area around the town.

I had to vote St. Gallen since where I live isn't an option "Ost-Schweiz, Graubünden, Chur.. one of the above" Anyways... according to the mercer report, it's still Zurich

True, but I'm quite sure that only three Swiss cities Mercer looks at are Zürich, Genève and Bern. I wouldn't think that the gap down to Lausanne would be that big for it not to make the list if they had considered it

I said Winterthur for similar reasons (it's the closest thing to a "home town" I've got in CH).

Well, at least it seems as if Zürich and Lausanne are winning by quite a margin within the two main language areas. Lugano is of course the only place in Italian Switzerland so no comparison there.

Basel, for many reasons (and lack of experience elsewhere)

None of the above

Not Ascona?

Canton Schwyz.

Only joking!

Had 2 tax bills in the last month - I am not appreciating the joke

Neuchatel....because it's the only place I've lived so by default is the best.

Seriously how can someone judge this without having lived in all those places?

I also voted for Neuchâtel (Also known as Newcastle....)

I like the countryside, the lake, the sunny weather, the language and the exceptionaly pretty girls! Unfortunately it's miles from anywhere.

I haved lived in Genève and I liked that too, I felt a real international feeling there. Bern is also OK, just a bit quiet (I live in the suburbs). Lausanne is also fine, I go there every weekend. Basel is also one of my favourites, it seems to be full of trees, and very laid back.

The best thing about Zurich is the train to Zug, (That'll wake the groaners up!), but seriously, what is it you like about Zurich? For 10 years I used to go there every week, and later I had a girl friend in Adliswil, so I did see a lot of the place. It seems so sterile and many of the people seem to be snobs, and know the price of everything and the value of nothing. Still I expect many of you work there and so you have to put up with it.

Fixed that for you...

"Lokalpatriotismus" spreading out Englishforum.

anywhere but Zurich???
