The best steak I've had in Switzerland and one of the best we have ever had (including steak houses in Scotland and USA) was the parkhuus restaurant at the grand Hyatt. The flavour of the steak was amazing and you can see them cooking in the open plan kitchen. Very pricey but a very good experience.
There's also Rolli's at Oerlikon - that's more of a hot plate and quantity thing though. It's not bad, but for pure flavour I'd try the parkhuus.
In fairness, Wolfgang Puck is Austrian, not German. Though I think it is more an immigrant reaction to discovering what a steak should be, and developing a passion for it.
Also, to the OP - Goodman in Zurich. Open thy wallet wide, but know that it is worth it.
Rolli's in Schlieren is also pretty good, they use American beef.
Another one which we like and is not that widely known, is the Steakhouse-Bahnhof Mettmenstetten. Beef is Swiss so not as full flavoured as others, but they are pretty good.
Goodmans and Churrasco are a little overrated in my view. They are ok, but price/value is a little below and the consistency is a little iffey.
Actually I would recommend if you are in Waldshut (DE). Go to the Kaufland and ask for the US Filet, now that is excellent and at EUR 49/kg (sometimes cheaper if on sale) its worth it! Then you can have a great steak at home:-)
Went to Rolli's last night. Very cute place, loved the fun atmosphere and the food was good. But the steaks are FAR from the best in Zurich. You do need a reservation - only place I've seen that has a line to get in the door at 5pm!
Karim has the best Steaks I can imagine. He, an Iranian, does not have a printed menu but explains you what he has. I just yesterday had a superb beef-Steak with an excellent Rioja-wine and at the end a perfect Vecchia Romagna. The steakhouse "Karim's Weinbistro" is located in Zwinglistrasse 6 just accross from the Bongo Indian Restaurant (Bongo is the oldest Indian place in Zürich) and indeed can be recommended, As add-on spices I used pepper and some Balsamico
I can't believe no one has mentioned Eisenhof in Kreis 5, just round the corner from the Riff Raff cinema (and opposite Maison Blunt). They've been going for years and the interior looks like it hasn't been changed since the 60's but the steaks are great and big.... beef or horse fillet for about 38 chufs, US Ribeye for about 45 I think. All served on a hot stone with fries and dips.
They do salads and burgers too, but I don't know anyone who orders anything but a steak. Ventilation is poor though so it gets quite smoky with all those hot stones later in the evening (but they do have some outside tables for warmer weather).
Jelmoli ZH Bahnhofstrasse food hall; not romantic but invest CHF29 and get a great meal. This alone has saved me more than CHF29 in expensive, spontaneous hunger-purchases around the hall afterwards.
Good spot for people watching on a Saturday lunchtime.
