Where can i get best thai food in basel?
It's a few doors down from Migros at Claraplatz (towards Claraplatz), and is literally a window. It's noticeable because of the various bright coloured menus stuck on the glass. There is a Thai grocery attached, through the adjacent door.
I like the Thai food at Saigon Moon (Brausebad) but it's really better known for its Vietnamese (as that's who run it). Nowhere in Basel (that I've found) is really that good, unfortunately. I mean, anyone (even me) can knock up a very good green/red/yellow etc curry as the authentic pastes and other ingredients are easy to buy here. The trick is to cook things in the right order - follow an authentic recipe. Top tip: Use thick coconut cream first in the wok at a very high heat and cook the paste in the oil which separates out of it. Then, just when you're about to sneeze from the chilli, add the other ingredients which need frying, then the coconut milk then the rest.
When I want something I'm too lazy to cook, especially a steamed fish dish (which I *think* is called Pla Neung Manao) I get it in London.
So I'm also keen to hear recommendations if anyone has any!
You might be right
But the window is still there.
The menu doesnt offer a large selection but I was surprised how fresh and authentic testing the food was (tried both the red and green thai curries), and very tasty. Much better than other places i have been to around Basel. Try the whole red snapper with sweet chilli, will hit the spot!
Its a small place so best plan to book. located in Klein Basel along tram line 8.
You'll like it. The sauce on top was all fresh stuff, cut ginger, sliced chillis, coriander etc. served with it still frying on top of the fish
Not really sure what authentic cuisine style they claim to serve, but there are some Thai-ish elements on the menu.
I am just finishing up a bowl of their red curry chicken as we speak!
A woman from work turned me onto this place.
I am really impressed with how fresh their flavors are.
Also nuanced and complex, not just blasts of spice or hotness.
In my view, it is better than Thai that I get back in the SF Bay Area and head-and-shoulders above Lilly's.
I see the same man and woman each time I go (weekly) and they are always so nice and smiling. The place is always pretty full and very crowded on Friday and Saturday evenings.
As another poster mentioned -- easy to get to, off the 8 line in KleinBasel around 5 or 6 blocks from Claraplatz.
Yum!
One is Restaurant Nordbahnhof just down from Kannendeldplatz. Green curry is particularly good. I usually get takeaway but lately every time I've been, most of the tables are occupied or have "reserved" labels on them, so perhaps book.
I also like a place near Badischer Bahnhof called Malai Thai, although I haven't been there for a couple of years.
It's not cheap (this is Switzerland), but it's good - it's Thai food but Michelin red book Thai food. Think up-market Thai.
Have you tried it yet?
