Bike parking at Zurich Hauptbanhof

I will move to Zurich in September, and will live near Altstetten Banhof. It looks good to take the train to the Hauptbanhof and then continue by foot/bike to the University zone. In this case where can i leave my bike at the Banhof for the night?

Is there a problem of night bike stealing (here is a plague )?

Are there free safe parkings in the zone?

Will it be taken away if parked outside of a indicated zone? (like at a lamp...)

My first idea was to bring the bike on the train, but i saw than on Monday-Friday at 6am-8am and 16-19 it is forbidden to take it on the S-Bahn

I totally need to understand where can i live with my bike safe in Zurich, thanks for the help!

........ that really doesn't sound like an option to me at all.

The bike WILL get stolen, if not immediately, but eventually.

My suggestion (and along your line of thought):

Search for a few absolute pieces of crap bikes..... the lower you can keep the cost, the better.

Just replace the bikes as they are stolen and or damaged.

Then weigh up if it is a cost effective solution.

You can Bank on the bikes not lasting long.

And how are the bike street in Zurich? Even if Altstetten-Zurich is a long run, i could do it someday with the bike (looks like a good 30 min ) but how's the road?

Can i go pretty fast on the bicycle path or are those full of people too? Is the snow/ice a big problem in winter or is clean pretty good?

The roads are fine but very steep in parts.

Re. taking the bike on the train, to my understanding you need to buy a separate ticket for it (might be 1/2 fare).

There is a place near the HB, (across from where the 4 tram run), where you can leave a bike, where it is locked indoors and there is somewhere, I believe it is only a Franc or 2 per day/night

You can ride all winter. Not many snow or ice days at least low down.

Why take the train at all? The bike will probably be quicker door to door, certanly faster than the 31 bus that goes that route.

There are two guarded velo parks at the Hauptbahnhof (Velostation Nord und Süd). It costs 60 Fr. a year.

This is your best option. They also rent bicycles for free. Just leave a 20CHF deposit and it yours for a day.

They have locked bicycle park spaces in Zurich main stations (Europaallee) for 1chf per day.

But they seem fully occupied now (Nov 2013), I mean "Velostation Süd" & "Velostation Nord".

Any safe alternative to leave a bicycle over the week end around that area?
