someone was just telling me all about BLUE potatoes. I guess i don't get around enough because this food is completely new to me. Now that had me wondering if these are available here. I think i'd like to try some blue mashed potatoes sometime
They do exist, and I've seen them in a local store, but can't remember where. Sorry. Not much help.
yep, St. Galler härdöpfeli, rather a strange taste I must say but they look lovely.
You can order them from leshop. They are called "Spezia Rara" and cost CHF 6.70/kg. I've seen them in Coop too.
Yep, we had a similar thing in the US - bluish - purplish potatoes. I can't recall the taste very well though... I thought they were rather mealy.
You can get blue potato crisps too. I've seen them in Coop. I think it's the 'Terra' brand.
I think it is one of those older sorts which have been rediscovered. Migros has chips as well. I have seen them in the shops, but just in Winter. I would like to get some as I think it would make an intersting Rösti mixed with the normal sort.
I've seen these around these last few years as well, haven't tried them yet, somehow blue food just seems wrong to me.
Friends of mine had them given to them, they mashed them and were rather revolted at the grey pile in the pot.
I think the trick is to cook them with the skins on, then peel and mash, then they should look like this.
oh my looks aweful. mushed blue potatoes does something strange to my stomach.
That reminds me of a programme I saw on food colours. We are heavily influenced by the colour of food. Blue is a very unnatural and rare colour in food and this is one of the reasons that it is used in some childrens' drinks and sweets.
Wow, those do not look healthy!
If i understood right, they are! It looks like an unnatural color but its all natural. Its packed full of antioxidants. Lets face it, do blueberries or beets have any stranger of a color? Nature is full of colors, we just aren't used to some.
Could be a fun BBQ dinner, blue potato salad and corn bread made with blue corn, I wonder what meat / sauce to make to go with the blue sides though...
I like them. Easy to find in the US as others say.
farmer hat on again - grown these in the past. There are several varieties of blue and purple potatoes. Some are old varieties being reintroduced with all sorts of anti this and ant that hogwash - they aren't high yielding so tend to be costly. Others are new varieties bred to take advantage of higher yield plus the new market the old varieties have found.
They are novel - but they are just potatoes . I'd rather have a Maris Piper or a King Edward any day.
They've been eating blue potatoes and other colored potatoes in Peru for a very long time. They were trendy in the States a while back, now not that hard to find there, guess they are starting to finally appear in Switzerland
I have had them in the states.... funny colored potatoes are becoming a hot item here. Whole Foods market sells small blue, white and red potatoes packaged together. I have served them boiled with butter, parsley and garlic to friends visiting from Europe- you know just to assert American superiority . Really, depending on the variety, they taste like other mass farmed potatoes but they make meal time fun for the kids. We've also had purple and yellow cauliflower and purple string beans. It's just a novelty.
I was reading tips on how to stick to a diet/eat less and they recommended eating from a blue plate as the mind doesn't recognise blue as a natural colour of food. I haven't tried it yet
Doesn't work... I have blue plates and once you cover them with food you don't see blue anymore
i was just in coop (sihlcity) and couldn't find any. Are they only available certain times of the year?
