Böögg - today at 18:00

Are we all synchronized to Tele Züri for the Böögg today at 18:00??

For whom is not familiar with the matter, let’s hope it will go better than last year

Cheers!

It would be nice if the Böögg had any history of accuracy.

Well, it does. Although only Swiss people would celebrate working an hour longer each day.
“The custom is based on a resolution passed by the Zurich Council on March 11, 1525: the church bell, which was rung at five o’clock during the winter months, was to be rung one hour later, at six o’clock, from the first Monday after the equinox.[10][11] This ringing of the church bell at six o’clock in the evening is celebrated at Zurich’s spring festival, Sechseläuten”

It’s just a fun Zurich festival - a bit less fun is that the members of a “Zunft” think of themselves as better than the rest of the population - not every celebrations needs a basis on war, death and/or victory.

There you go

But it’s the 4th Monday in April this year.

Probably shunted it on a week due to Easter.

Just checking my old posts and it’s been a year, time flies  enjoy everyone and hopefully today it will burn faster than last year!

What are the records at both ends?

According to AI

Die längste Brenndauer des Zürcher Bööggs betrug 57 Minuten (2023), während die kürzeste Zeit 5 Minuten und 7 Sekunden (1974) gemessen wurde.

1956 04:00
1968 and 1971 05:00
1974 05:07, the introduction of seconds in time measurement (or recording)

1970 and 1988 40:00
2016 43:34
2023 57:00

Well my AI says

Analyses by media outlets and MeteoSwiss show that, over many years, the Böögg has been wrong more often than right when matched against actual summer temperatures.

And what about the overfed Marmot?

How long it takes the Böögg to catch fire and explode depends on variables associated with the wood in the bonfire underneath:

  • What sort of wood is used.
  • How compact is the wood packed.
  • Moisture content of the wood.
  • How windy the day is.
  • How wet the day is.

and more.

It’s a bit of harmless fun with the times over the years having absolutely no correlation with the coming summer weather conditions.

This is unlike other weather-related folk law which can be explained by Science such as:

Red sky in morning , shepherds warning.
Red sky at night, sailors delight.

Mackerel skies and mares’ tails make tall ships carry low sails.
