Is the Kanton Zug "border"? Is Zurich or Basel "border"?
"Cross-border commuters are foreign nationals who are resident in a foreign border zone and are gainfully employed within the neighbouring border zone of Switzerland. The term "border zone" describes the regions with have been fixed in cross-border commuter treaties concluded between Switzerland and its neighbouring countries."

Not sure I understood the question: do you live in a bordering country? What's your nationality?
G permit is given to Cross-border commuters who return to their main place of residence abroad at least once a week.
So you can potentially have a G permit and work in any Swiss Canton, as long as you go back to your country at least once a week.
Cross border commuters usually go back and forth every day.
They must also have permanent residency in said neighbouring country to qualify.
The City Freiburg, the kreisfreie City Kempten (Allgäu), and the following Landkreise: Breisgau–Hochschwarzwald, Lörrach, Waldshut-Tiengen, Schwarzwald – Baar-Kreis, Tuttlingen, Konstanz, Sigmaringen, Biberach, Ravensburg, Bodenseekreis, Lindau, and Oberallgäu.
The border region in Switzerland with respect to Germany are:
BS, BL, SO, BE (Districts Laufen, Moutier, and Wangen), JU (District Delémont), AG (w/o District Muri), ZH (w/o Districts Affoltern and Horgen), SH, TG, SG, AI, AR und FL.

(my layout, for clarity)
4.4.12 Cross-border commuters (Art. 25 AIG)
The conditions for the employment of cross-border commuters (personal scope of application, definition of the border zone, etc.) are primarily laid out in the agreements with the four neighboring states (cf. Section 4.8.3). The defined border zones apply to the gainful employment of third-country nationals.
However, persons can work in the whole of Switzerland as cross-border commuters coming from all areas: from 1st June 2007: of the EU-17 and EFTA states, from 1st May 2011: of the EU-8 states, and from 1st June 2016: of the EU-2 states.
I am in a similar situtation. Permanent resident in France, near Basel for the past few years. Would Basel be my only option for qualifying for a G permit?
Would Zurich not be an option because of the distance?
Any personal experience would be appreciated
