My 83 year old mother will be visiting us for 10 days. Instead of bringing her bulky and heavy wheelchair all the way from the US we would rather find one for her here to use temporarily. Sometimes at airports they are roughly handled that they arrive at their destination with missing parts or broken. I called a place in Romanel and unfortunately they rent only on a monthly basis. They are charging Chf 80 and for cleaning another Chf 20. That's rather expensive and we only need it for 10 days. Could somebody give me any information? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I called CHUV and apparently they don't rent wheelchairs if you are not their patient. They gave me a number to call and hopefully I will get a positive result from that.
Ask your local Red Cross. Although 10CHF per day is very good value, I think.
Have a lovely time with your mum.
A UK friend of mine who lives on the other side of the Lake is currently renting one for her sister's visit - so I've pm'ed her to ask for detail of where and cost, just in case.
Edit PS: my friend has just got back to me. Apparently you can hire them from most pharmacies in France (have to be ordered in advance though). She paid 28 Euros for 8 days, but had to leave a 300 Euros deposit (returnable when she takes the w/chair back).
Try contacting these people - I regularly use them to hire a Wheelchair on a private basis (ie not through Health Insurance) when my Mother comes to visit. They charge 59ChF for a months hire plus 30ChF cleaning fee and, for an additional fee of about 30ChF will deliver it to you (I always go to Liestal to collect it myself). They don't speak much English so I always send a 'google' translated e-mail and have never had any problems, although I do take my fluent German speaking children with me when I go to pick up or take back the chair just in case!!
If you buy or rent, make sure you check whether it is suitable for your mum's weight. Some of the cheaper ones are not suitable for heavier people. I bought one from UK for my very low weight mum, and she used it later at the old people's home where she became resident. After mum died, we gave it to the OAP home for their use. They used it for an older resident who was quite a big lady, and it broke. She fell forwards and was badly bruised, but fortunately nothing serious. I fell terrible about it, but really the staff at the home were responsible
