I currently give my daughter toast for breakfast, but have heard that some breads are better for little digestive systems. Does anyone know what type is best?
Cereal??.....Which is best for babies? The stock in Switzerland are normally the high in sugar and salt ones and as far as I know the shops here do not stock cheerios, bite sized shredded wheat or baby weetabix by cow and gate or even oatabix. I could only find one kiddy one, coop own brand, but that also contains salt.....any ideas anyone of where to get cereal suitable for a 9 month old?
I think the general guideline is to stay away from "high fibre" products with babies and toddlers so I wouldn't give her high fibre breads or cereals.
Hipp does some good baby cereals (I have used the Good Night version for breakfasts), plus there are a few others either with banana or other fruits. No added salt or sugar.
I was making porridge every morning, blitzing it first to make the oats smaller, but lo keeps spitting it our, even if I add fruit as flavour. Perservered for a couple of weeks but she wont take it.
The Hipp goodnight one I use before bed so will look to use it as breakfast and check out any other flavoured ones.
I want to vary the breakfast as much as possible, have given scrammbled eggs, fruit and pancakes, toast etc but wanted some more finger food type breakfasts to replace the toast that she likes.
I gave my kiddo a piece of bread just to gnaw on, since it was the best for teething.
But I think bread might be too early, specially not toasted!
There is something here called petit pain au lait, which is meant to little kids, maybe a piece of that would be ok. My child also didn't like the usually baby oatmeals soft stuff, it didn't have enough flavor for her. There are cereal baby biscuits, but I do think they are from one year up.
Here you can find some nice finger foods and appropriate ages.
I've bought mini shreddies, mini weetabix/oatibix and (I think) Cheerios at Coop. They haven't had the mini Shreddies for a while now which is a bit annoying. Not sure if they've stopped selling tem or just having difficulty getting them as the space on the shelf is just empty - not replaced with anything else.
My little one also eats a Coop own cereal - a couple of Jamadu ones so they're supposedly 'healthier' for little people. Other than that he usually eats toast (I get a wholemeal toasting loaf from Aldi as Coop mostly have white), normal weetabix (broken up with milk) or fruit for breakfast.
You could try Weetabix, that what my health visitor reccommended for my boys, but that was a few years age. Porridge is a good one too I think as mine wont eat it as a didnt give it to them when they were small and I really wish I had.
Thank you all, will check out the other coops, may just be my local one that does not sell the cereals I am after.
I have only given lo toast before and not just bread, but thanks for all of your suggestions, will look out for that lait bread that was mentioned also.
Cupboard now packed with some different cereal 'add water' jobs, which I dont really like as lo cant practice her chewing but if she likes them then all the better for a speedy breakfast when off to work.
White bread is best to start as it is easy for them to digest. Brown bread obviously has more nutritional value and something you need to wean them onto when they are a little older before they become too accustomed to the White stuff and reject it.
We used to give my son bread or toast crusts to chew on fairly soon after we started him on solids - so 7-8 months or so if memory serves. Great for a teething baby. All our bread is homemade from organic wholemeal flour. Today he is a healthy 4 year old so didn't do him any harm.
Holle do some nice baby cereals of varying thickness/graininess and also 'zweiback' (I think that's how you spell it...) toasted bread things, suitable for babies, without any additives. You can get Holle stuff from bigger drogeries, generally not from the supermarkets.
Exactly what I did I also offered porridge and smashed up banana amongst the first foods at that age. If your child is refusing the porridge, try altering the consistency of it to see if that helps.
I don't see anything wrong with toast for brekkies; white bread is easy to digest, and toasting it add to the digeribiliy. SO perfect... Maybe in a little while, you can vary a bit the type of bread, or add a bit of mashed banana as a "jam" on top.
YOu can also make simple instant fruit jams with just one or two spoonfuls of sugar to use for her, they cook in minutes and you store them in a baby-food jar in the fridge, that will add variety.
I like the idea to give her bread crusts for teething.
I think the rule is - keep it simple! do whatever works for you and your family.
