Business Translations German-->English

Just a few questions.

How would you translate

Kauffrau (businesswoman?)

Ausgleichskasse (Compensation Office?)

Bezirk (county?)

Thanks!

This from OH, who has dealt with Swiss systems for years:

Kauffrau/Kauffmann designation results from a special education strand that can start even before graduation from school. It's a technical education leading to bookkeeping, finances, etc.

Ausgleichskasse is an office/scheme relating to mandatory Swiss retirement insurance, on top of regular retirement insurance...there's even a third layer of insurance that is privately regulated.

Bezirk is like a French departement or UK/US county.

Kauffrau was traditionally translated as clerk but personally I would go for businesswoman these days.

Bezirk I would translate as county.

Ausgleichkasse i believe relates to a company pension fund scheme so I would say pension benefits office or something similar.

It's particular to bookkeepking/finance, though...financial clerk? Financial officer?

I'm teaching young business students and had forgotten that some of the Swiss terms are difficult to translate. I did some internet research but wasn't satisfied with some of the suggestions. Thanks again for your help.

It’s not really.

The qualification is more general than that in Switzerland, they may specialise later on.

It’s EFZ Kaufmann/Kauffrau in German or CFC employé de commerce in french and covers a wide range of topics so financial clerk or financial officer would narrow it down too much.

There is an offical translation for all of these terms.

See here for Kaufmann/Kauffrau https://www.sbfi.admin.ch/sbfi/de/ho…ichnungen.html and search for Verzeichnis_der_englischen_Titelbezeichnungen_de_f r_it_20161222.pdf

For Ausgleichskasse see here https://www.ahv-iv.ch/en/Contacts/Ca…sation-offices

and Bezirk as well. The use Districts here https://www.bfs.admin.ch/bfs/en/home…il.453856.html

Kaufmann is translated by the federal government with “commercial employee”, plus industry-specific specifications. Awkward, this doesn’t really work.

Bezirk/county works because the are indeed comparable (though the details will differ still).

The translations for Kaufmann/-frau and Ausgleichskasse don’t work because they have no comparable counterpart in the anglosaxon world, I’d use the German (or French) terms instead plus an explanation.

FWIW I wouldn't use "county" for Bezirk but "district".
