Butterflies in Switzerland - WOW

Being from the green belt of London i grew up only ever seeing cabbage butterflies.........which even in the last 10-15 years have decreased some what in numbers.

Since being here i have noticed an abundance of amazing coloured butterflies, having never seen butterflies (other than on the telly) with my own eyes i thought it was pretty cool.

Im sure there are others on the forum who are far more knowledgable in the butterfly department.

Feel free to post anything butterfly related.

Cheers

Wow, that's beautiful. Very impressed.

In the UK where i used to live we had really beautiful butterflies, very colourful, but here i have only seen white ones .

cool picture.

last time i was in England i took my daughter to a "Butterfly Farm".

Was bloody hot inside but really cool butterflies.

They were everywhere. Most landing on us and around us.

Also inside the Hall was a Fish Pond full of bloody large Koi.

Oh yeah, and a few ducks just for good measure.....

Did you take that photo in Switzerland? May sound a daft question but I just haven't seen a butterfly like it. If so, where was it taken and roughly how big. I'm an entomologist, so quite like to find out what species it is.

I have not seen many butterflies here, mainly brown moths (that like to decimate my food cupboard when I am away), but I haven't been out looking much either...clearly I should!

by the power of the Internet ... 8-)

This doesn't look like any Eurorean Butterfly in my books or the Natural History Museum database. If it was in Switzerland, I am guessing that it either escaped from a collection or was seriously blown off course.

It might even be a brooch (albeit a high quality one), for all we know.

A brooch?

Well its a lovely pic. Well spotted!

LOL i did not take that photo

I just googled butterflies and that one looked nice.

I did try to take a pic of the one currently in my garden, but he/she would never stay still.

The most colorful butterfly that I've seen in Switzerland is the Swallowtail . I even raised some caterpillars, like the class in this link.

Being the very trusting person that I am, I was giving you the benefit of the doubt that it might have escaped from somewhere like the Papiliorama, Swiss Tropical Gardens at Kerzers.

Perhaps you may see these there.

This one here is my favourite (called "Tagpfauenauge") - sadly, you don't see as many anymore as you used to back when I was still a kid:

The Natur-Museum in Luzern has a pretty good collection of butterflies and other bugs. It's a good way to spend a rainy afternoon with the kids.

We have several butterfly bushes in our garden. They attract such beautiful butterflies.

Such a pity all that beauty only last 3 days.

Not quite a butterfly but we get Hummingbird Moths visiting our garden, quite facsinating to watch.
