Buying a Kindle in Switzerland

I have changed back and forth between .de and .fr a couple of times. Then, the system got confused. I pressed some kind of help-button on the amazon.de site and I got helped within no time, the setting was put how I wanted it again. I have no idea how that happened, it just did.

Between .de and .fr, there is no difference as far as the offer is concerned, you have now to make the comparison test with .co.uk because of English books.

The Kindle Touch is now available for global shipping. However, this only goes for the Wifi-only version. As I don't need 3G on the Kindle (I have that on my current last-gen keyboard Kindle and never use it), I really don't care and have just ordered one.

Mine will arrive from the UK on Monday.

Buying a Kindle anywhere ..no thanks.

Interestingly enough, Amazon doesn't ship the 3G Touch outside the US, yet it is available at digitec. Hmmmm.....

For people who travel all the time, as I do, the Kindle gives the possibility to carry any number of books to suit the mood, and to be able to switch books if it becomes apparent, half way through a book, that it's drivel, or how the whodunit ends is all too obvious.

There are also many books available on the Kindle site free of charge, not all of them rubbish.

I'm sure there are other devices for downloading books - iPad etc. - but, for anyone who just wants to read, I find the Kindle perfect.

What I do miss is the ability to pass really good books on to English-speaking friends, but I still sometimes buy books I've read on the Kindle from the charity shops, when I'm in London, so that I can I can pass them on to friends here in Switzerland.

I don't ever use the keyboard so would have bought the new smaller Kindle if it had been available when I bought mine.

I'm one very happy customer and Amazon UK treat me very well, even to the extent of sending a new leather cover to me, by courier, free of charge, when something went wrong with mine on a trip to London.

I have an iPad but keep on using a Kindle - why? Because the iPad's screen causes eye-strain, similar to a normal computer monitor. I already spend 90% of my day sitting in front of a screen, so at home or on vacation, I prefer the book-like ink-screen the Kindle offers.

Also, I buy all my eBooks on Amazon anyway - they simply have the largest selection.

That's the main reason I have a kindle, the screen. I get tired of looking to a computer like screen.

I bought it for my wife for Christmas from digitec. It's very nice and the 3G connectivity works as expected. What doesn't work is accessing the (UK) store from the link on the device.

You can use the built in browser to access the store, or buy your books from another kindle or a PC and the delivery over 3G works perfectly.

I expect that when a 3G version is available in the UK the store will no longer detect and refuse access to my wife's import.

You need to log on to the web site via your pc and change your settings to go to the UK site, you can't do it on your kindle. We did it this weekend and managed to register a kindle to the UK site. Wasn't easy, PM Ace1 if you want to know exact details

@ceppych - "What I do miss is the ability to pass really good books on to English-speaking friends"

Now, far be it from me to recommend that you break copyright or publishing laws, but... there is a way to do this: you first of all need to download Calibre (which is a very useful and free tool for managing your Kindle library or, for example, importing virtually any e-book format onto your Kindle), then download a plugin for it.

Then, when you want to download a book from Amazon, choose the option to download it to a computer first rather than straight to your Kindle. You then import the book into your Calibre library which will strip the security from the book, and from there move it onto your Kindle or pass it to friends to put on their Kindles.

But keep this to yourself. If this secret gets out then Amazon might do something about it.

Did someone recently ordered Kindle touch from amazon.com? How much it cost at the end?

Thanks!

About 230 Fr., if memory serves right

Kindle touch wifi version, buy from Amazon.com(international) in Switzerland, costs USD 139.00

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

But the end price need to add "Shipping & Handling" for CHF 20,05

and Import Fees Deposit for CHF 12,23

So the Total costs CHF 165,10 , which is the same as in digitec.ch

It use "Priority International Courier", takes 2~4 days.

I almost click the button, but than I hesitated.

Since I need to pay so much more money for the device, and yet I couldn't get the cover I wanted (which is only available in Amazon US), maybe I should just wait until we go to US and get it there.

Absolutely love my Kindle - so great to read on it, I actually sometimes do forget I'm not reading a "real" physical book.

You can associate your Kindle to whatever Amazon site you want regardless of your billing address. Either on your computer or on your Kindle go to Country Settings and pick what you want. Personally, I find the selection on .com and co.uk larger than on the mainland Europe sites.

I have the Touch with surfing locked to Amazon (and of course the dictionary which I love), and I don't mind at all - I want to read, not surf.

Beware with the Kindle Fire - you won't be able to benefit from all of the Amazon Prime lending libraries and instant videos outside of the US which is a real shame

By the way, you can "lend" your Kindle copy of some books to friends - have a look in the Help menu. Haven't done it myself, but know it is possible depending on the publisher's policy.

I think that a Samsung Tab 7'' is a better buy than the Kindle Fire, why?

1 - You have access to the Google App Store

2 - You can install the Kindle App and Amazon Store App

3 - Install whatever apps you want from Google App Store, not being limited by amazon.

I love my Kindle, I was actually the first swiss resident to receive one (they sent a nice letter too... and sent me back some money when they put down the price a few weeks later)..... great for travel (except for uninformed flight attendants that want me to turn it off during the flight.... should I also take the batteries out of my wristwatch?!?!?!?).

If you're still in to ordering one, have a look on Ebay, maybe there's a US seller who will ship (Locked from 105$, unlocked from 149.99$). Otherwise with the pound so low, a UK seller maybe

Have fun

Interested to know why. Because you oppose eBooks in general, or Amazon in specific?

I've heard of this before. Interesting. The problem is not the power, it is the ability to transmit and receive via wireless. All you should have to do is tell them the wifi is turned off and they should be happy. I've never actually had this happen to me though. Considering the power usage they shouldn't even need to be turned off during take-off and landing, but I can understand that identifying and training the attendants in the nuances of each piece of tech is far harder than simply a blanket ban during these times.

I told them about that too... they didn't even know it had a connection.... nope, they won't let you use it...... in economy that is, I've never had any problems in business...
